Help Your Child to Become a Better Writer

Mar 01, 2017
Writing is a crucial skill for success in school, work and life, but it isn’t an easy task for all students. For many struggling writers, it can be challenging to put thoughts into words on a page.
Here are tips to help students to improve their writing:
  • Spend time organizing your ideas and thinking about what you really want to say.
  • What is your goal? Is it to inform, entertain, or persuade?
  • Consider your audience. Use formal language for an academic audience, and a conversational tone for an informal piece.
  • Prepare an outline before you begin to write.
  • Use transition words, such as “after,” “although,” “before,” “however” and “therefore” to help your ideas flow together.
  • Be willing to revise. Change your sentences and paragraphs around, add material that lends to your writing and delete material that doesn’t work.
  • Avoid clichés and jargon.
  • Use a dictionary to help with spelling.
  • Try a thesaurus to help you think of a new way to say something.
  • Ask someone else to edit your work.
  • Proofread everything. Make sure grammar, spelling and punctuation are perfect before you declare anything “finished.”
Abbotsford Sylvan Learning's Academic Writing program teaches students a step-by-step process to pre-write, draft, revise, edit and publish. Our tutors focus on improving core writing skills so that your child learns to write clearly, concisely, and most importantly, independently.
