Our tutors and staff in Hamilton consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Hamilton know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.     Mubarak Ali Thiwan an engineer by profession, whose educational journey had instilled in him a need of providing accessible and productive learning environment for all students. He has extensive business management and leadership expertise in previous ventures from around the world that allows him to manage/lead this center in a well-organized manner. Mubarak is also responsible for ensuring Sylvan high operating standards are met and that parents and students enjoy the maximum benefits from their Sylvan experience.

    Kadi Hebblethwaite

    Educational Coordinator

    Kadi completed her Hons. BA at McMaster University and her B.Ed at Brock University with a focus on Fine Arts and History at the Intermediate/Senior level. She has had extensive experience working with students with different social, economic, cultural and educational backgrounds and students with a variety of physical and intellectual needs. Kadi believes that inclusion, support and equal opportunities prosper growth and success. Her teaching experience ranges from the basics such as English, math, drawing and photography to extracurricular activities such as gymnastics, LIT courses and soccer. In her spare time she enjoys watching her son play with other babies and teaching him new things.
  • Stephanie Burgoyne, Teacher

    Stephanie Burgoyne


    Stephanie holds a Ph.D in Philosophy and a B.Ed. in mathematics and music. Additionally, she holds a number of music degrees and diplomas such as the Associateship of the Royal Canadian College of Organists. Stephanie has taught Mathematics, English, French and Music in public high schools and Higher Mathematics in various universities over the last ten years, and enjoys tutoring all subjects at Sylvan Hamilton. She has served as Organist and Music Director at a number of churches and teaches piano and music theory privately and she is a collaborative pianist for many soloists and instrumentalists.
  • Bonnie Thompson, Teacher

    Bonnie Thompson


    Bonnie moved to Hamilton from her home in Timmins Ontario in 2001 and joined Sylvan Hamilton shortly after. She received her BA from Laurentian University and her B.ED from Nipissing University. The majority of her career was spent with the Timmins School Board. She taught Primary Methods for Nipissing University for three summers and enjoyed working with other teachers. At Sylvan, Bonnie enjoys tutoring students in the areas of Reading, Writing, and Study Skills. In her spare time she enjoys walking her two Collie dogs, spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, volunteering at the RBG, and attending theatre performances.

    Julia Spilotro


    Julia joined the Sylvan Hamilton team in May 2015. She obtained a BSc in Biological Science from the University of Guelph, and a BEd from Western. Julia’s favourite subjects to teach are science and math! When she’s not at Sylvan, Julia enjoys playing soccer, reading, and spending time with her family and friends.
  • Alyssa Hanesiak, Teacher

    Alyssa Hanesiak


    Alyssa completed her BSc at the University of Toronto where she majored in Math and English. She earned her teaching qualifications at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. She has been teaching math (and sometimes art or geography) for the past 3 years. She joined Sylvan in September 2017 and especially loves tutoring students in math - even calculus! She also enjoys learning about computer coding in her spare time and working with students in the STEM club. Before becoming a teacher she worked as a cake decorator and she can usually be found curling or doing yoga when she isn’t teaching.
  • Suganya Gnanakumaran, Teacher

    Suganya Gnanakumaran


    Suganya obtained a BSc in Neuroscience from McMaster University in April 2018. Shortly following her graduation, she joined the Sylvan Hamilton Team. She is currently pursuing an MD degree at McMaster to work towards her goal of becoming a physician. However, she has had extensive experience tutoring including serving as a McMaster math and science tutor for first-year university students. Suganya’s favourite subjects to teach are the high school sciences and math - she is our Senior Math and Science specialist! When she’s not at Sylvan, Suganya enjoys figure skating, running, and spending time in the lab learning anatomy!
  • Megan Perry, Teacher

    Megan Perry


    Megan joined the Sylvan Hamilton team in February 2018. She completed her BA at McMaster University in History/English and then obtained her teaching degree (Primary/Junior) while studying at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. Megan is currently working as an elementary occasional teacher. She enjoys tutoring students across many different subject areas at Sylvan, but especially Reading and Writing skills. In her spare time, Megan enjoys travelling and spending time outdoors and with her friends and family.
  • Rachel Wood, Teacher

    Rachel Wood


    Rachel joined the Sylvan Hamilton team in 2018. She is currently a teacher candidate at Brock University in the intermediate/senior division, and she has a B.Sc. from the University of Guelph in Wildlife Biology with a minor in Math. Rachel's favourite subjects to learn about and teach are biology and math. Biology has always peaked her curiosity because of how amazing living things are and math is the ultimate brain teaser. When Rachel is not at Sylvan, she likes to go on walks through the escarpment, read books, and drink tea.
