Our tutors and staff in Hamilton consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Hamilton know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.     Mubarak Ali Thiwan an engineer by profession, whose educational journey had instilled in him a need of providing accessible and productive learning environment for all students. He has extensive business management and leadership expertise in previous ventures from around the world that allows him to manage/lead this center in a well-organized manner. Mubarak is also responsible for ensuring Sylvan high operating standards are met and that parents and students enjoy the maximum benefits from their Sylvan experience.

    Bonnie moved to Hamilton from her home in Timmins Ontario in 2001 and joined Sylvan Hamilton shortly after. She received her BA from Laurentian University and her B.ED from Nipissing University. The majority of her career was spent with the Timmins School Board. She taught Primary Methods for Nipissing University for three summers and enjoyed working with other teachers. At Sylvan, Bonnie enjoys tutoring students in the areas of Reading, Writing, and Study Skills. In her spare time she enjoys walking her two Collie dogs, spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, volunteering at the RBG, and attending theatre performances.

    Julia joined the Sylvan Hamilton team in May 2015. She obtained a BSc in Biological Science from the University of Guelph, and a BEd from Western. Julia’s favourite subjects to teach are science and math! When she’s not at Sylvan, Julia enjoys playing soccer, reading, and spending time with her family and friends.

    Megan joined the Sylvan Hamilton team in February 2018. She completed her BA at McMaster University in History/English and then obtained her teaching degree (Primary/Junior) while studying at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. Megan is currently working as an elementary occasional teacher. She enjoys tutoring students across many different subject areas at Sylvan, but especially Reading and Writing skills. In her spare time, Megan enjoys travelling and spending time outdoors and with her friends and family.

    Kadi completed her Hons. BA at McMaster University and her B.Ed at Brock University with a focus on Fine Arts and History at the Intermediate/Senior level. She has had extensive experience working with students with different social, economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds and students with a variety of physical and intellectual needs. Kadi believes that inclusion, support and equal opportunities prosper growth and success. Her teaching experience ranges from the basics such as English, math, drawing, and photography to extracurricular activities such as gymnastics, LIT courses, and soccer. In her spare time, she enjoys watching and encouraging her kids' athletic and artistic talents.

    Jessica, from Hamilton, joined the Sylvan Hamilton Team in September 2019. She completed her B.Sc. in Biology & Environmental Science from McMaster University. Jessica worked as an environmental scientist at an engineering consulting firm for a couple of years before she decided to pursue her dream career as a teacher. 
    Currently in teacher’s college at Brock University's intermediate/senior division, Jessica enjoys learning in all areas, but loves the sciences including biology, chemistry, math, geography, and the environment. In her spare time, she can be found practicing her photography skills, making crafts, and thinking up cool STEM experiments for her Saturday STEM Club members.

    Alexandra, an Honours English graduate from McMaster University, takes pride in assisting Sylvan students in becoming confident readers and writers since June 2019. She teaches students from grades 1-12, with a focus on English & Literacy. Alex is completing her teaching certification at Brock University, finding her student teacher experience an excellent opportunity to demonstrate her passion for learning and for teaching.  
  • Erin Vandergriendt, Teacher (Primary/Secondary, English Literature & French)

    Erin, a teacher candidate at Brock University, teaches English Literature and French as a Second Language. What does Erin have to say?  “While I will likely be working with high school students in the future, I also enjoy teaching younger children. As an English Major, it is no surprise that I have a love for reading all types of books! I love to travel and learn about different cultures. Sylvan is a great opportunity for me to do what I love, while also practicing the skills I will soon use in my own classroom. It offers a great and positive environment that is organised and clearly shows care for their students.”
