Our tutors and staff in SW Calgary consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Calgary know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.     Karyn Hodges, BA, BEd

    Centre Director

    Karyn holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education from UBCO in Kelowna, BC. Karyn grew up on the rainy west coast of British Columbia and has lived in Calgary for over 5 years. She has worked with Sylvan Learning for 10 years, starting as a part-time teacher, then a Director of Education, and is now thrilled to be the Centre Director of the Calgary SW Sylvan. In her spare time, she likes to read and spend time with her friends and family, especially her cat.

    Christian Thiessen

    Assistant Director

    Christian has worked as a Sylvan teacher for nearly a year and has recently become the Assistant Director. He loves the one-on-one teaching experience with the students. He has a B.Ed in English and Art. Christian works with students of all grades and his outgoing personality puts the students at ease. When he is not working, Christian plays video games and makes digital art.

    Rebecca Carrol


    Rebecca is a fun and energetic teacher who has been with Sylvan for over 6 years. She has a diploma in Early Childhood Education and is currently gaining a Bachelor of Professional Arts in Human Services degree from Athabasca University. Rebecca loves to work with children of all ages and hopes to use her degree towards becoming a student counsellor. She loves working at Sylvan because she gets to see students grow, learn, and build knowledge on new concepts. When Rebecca is not working at Sylvan, you can find her in the Rocky Mountains hiking and exploring nature with her dog Hazel.
  • Gina Carroll, Tutor

    Gina Carroll


    Gina is an enthusiastic tutor obtaining her B.Ed at the UofC. While she is currently specializing in Secondary Social Studies, Gina hopes to pursue a career in Elementary or Early Childhood Education. Gina has a Masters of Science degree in Human Osteology and Funerary Archaeology, and has presented her research at numerous academic conferences worldwide. Prior to pursuing a B. Ed, Gina also completed three years of Doctoral research at the UofC, where she majored in Biological Anthropology and Clinical Medicine. In her spare time, Gina teaches emotional awareness and financial management skills to Elementary school students, and enjoys spending quality time with her family.

    Hailey Commet


    Hailey has been tutoring with Sylvan for about 8 months and loves every minute of it! Working one on one with students has always been a passion of hers. She enjoys watching the students grow and become increasingly successful with the concepts they are learning. Hailey holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and is in her last semester of her Bachelor of Education degree; both from St. Mary's University in Calgary. She also spent 5 years as an Educational Assistant in a special needs school and received an Educational Assistant Certificate from MRU. Hailey loves taking her dogs out for walks, doing puzzles, and reading! She also knows a lot of interesting dinosaur facts!

    Jennifer Lam


    Jennifer has been with Sylvan for 7 months. She has a Bachelors of Science in Biological Sciences and she is working to complete her Bachelor of Education. She likes working for Sylvan because Sylvan provides a flexibility that allows her to interact with students on a student-teacher basis. She has been tutoring for many years and Sylvan provides her with opportunities to teach students of all ages with different learning styles and levels which will help her in my future profession as an educator. When she is not working or studying, she spends her time as a foodie! She also loves spending time with her dogs and cat, watching movies and shows, and spending time with family and friends.

    Mark Paul


    Mark has been working with students at Sylvan for over two years now, having completed a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology prior to his Bachelor of Education- Social Studies. He enjoys working with students of all levels and ages and finds the best way to connect with them is by making jokes. When he is not at work, Mark likes to make music and art!
  • Danny Snodgrass, Teacher

    Danny Snodgrass


    Danny has been with Sylvan since late 2018. He has a B.A. in History and B. Ed. He especially enjoys teaching high school ELA students but works with students of all levels and ages. Danny enjoys the one-on-one aspect of Sylvan and helping the students find their academic strengths and successes. When not at work, Danny likes to paint, write, read, play video games and shoot bows.
  • Shaylynn Tell, Teacher

    Shaylynn Tell


    Shaylynn has a B. Sc. degree with a major in Marine Biology from Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS. She went on to complete a graduate diploma in secondary education from the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. She is originally from Whitby, ON and she just moved to Calgary this past fall. She has been teaching at Sylvan for 4 months! She truly enjoys teaching at Sylvan because of the one-on-one time she gets to spend with the students. She also enjoys teaching all the different ages and grade levels of the students at Sylvan. If she has a free second, you can find her going for a run, hiking in the mountains, and taking care of her foster animals!

    Kassandra Tobias


    Kassy has been a tutor at Sylvan since August 2019. She has a B.A. Honours Psychology and is currently pursuing her B. Ed. in hopes to teach high school Maths and/or Science. Kassy enjoys teaching because she gets to see the students take pride in their work and improve on skills that they once considered difficult. When she is not teaching, Kassy enjoys spending time with her family, being in the mountains, and making wedding floral arrangements. 
  • Cole Westin, Teacher

    Cole Westin


    Cole has been with the Sylvan SW team since Fall of 2019. He holds a degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts, as well as Bachelor of Education. Cole enjoys teaching at Sylvan because it is a fun learning environment and also gives him a chance to grow and develop as a teacher. When Cole is not a Sylvan, you can find him reading books, playing video games, or doing some story writing of his own. 
  • April Wong, Tutor

    April Wong


    April has been with Sylvan for about a year now. She has a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Toronto. April loves teaching because she enjoys seeing the spark in students’ eyes when they understand a concept and when they learn about a topic that they are interested in. In her spare time, April enjoys spending time with her family, reading novels, exercising, and catching up on movies and TV shows.
