Our tutors and staff in Atascocita & Humble consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Houston know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.   • Khristen Kirkland, CENTER DIRECTOR

    Khristen Kirkland


    Khristen Kirkland is an educator that has had the pleasure of teaching students in elementary and middle school for the past nine years. As a result, she has gained the knowledge to accommodate different learning styles and incorporate effective methods to meet the unique needs of students. She believes in upholding high expectations for every child. Khristen has earned a Master's of Science in K-12 Education from Capella University & is certified in both elementary education and middle school math. In her free time, Khristen enjoys going to concerts, visiting museums, cooking new dishes, and playing video games. She dabbles in playing various brass instruments, such as trumpet and trombone (while no Louis Armstrong, she can play many tunes!)

    Tiara Kirksey


    Tiara is a graduate of the University of Houston- Downtown with a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology and a Master's of Science in Human Resources from Houston Baptist University. She also has her Early Childhood through 6th-grade Teaching Certification in all core subjects. In Tiara’s free time she enjoys swimming, doing puzzles, and spending time with her family. She feels like teaching is an excellent way to serve her community and make a difference in each child’s life.

    Christina Arnold


    Christina oversees the educational integrity of our programs. She manages and develops our team of tutors at the Sylvan Learning. She is an expert with academic development at Sylvan as she has been with us for over 15 years. Christina is a graduate of Sam Houston State University and holds a teaching certificate in Generalist EC-8. Christina enjoys helping all of her students. In her free time, Christina enjoys scrapbooking, reading, and spending time with family.

    Jesna Cherian


    Jesna is a graduate of Houston Baptist University with a Bachelor of Science in Allied Health and Kinesiology. She has been working with young children in different capacities for years and discovered her love for teaching! This led her to begin tutoring and providing supplemental instruction while in college. Jesna really enjoys singing, dancing, and spending time with family and friends in her free time. She is a very kind and outgoing person with a wonderful sense of humor.

    Joseph Rodriguez


    Joseph is a tutor at Sylvan Learning in Atascocita with a gift for working with kids. While Joseph has many tutoring talents, he finds the greatest joy in tutoring Reading, Math, and STEM. Joseph is a graduate of the University of St. Thomas, University of Phoenix, and Walden University and holds a Master’s Degree in Education and Technology. In his free time, Joseph enjoys working with new and existing technology.

    Astrid Reyes


    Astrid is a fun teacher at Sylvan Learning Center of Atascocita with a gift for working with kids! While Astrid has many tutoring talents, she loves teaching reading and writing. Astrid is a graduate from San Jacinto College, and is currently pursuing an additional degree from the University of Houston. Astrid is a motivated and outgoing teacher who enjoys spending her free time running with her dogs. 
  • Daphne Wilson, CERTIFIED TEACHER

    Daphne Wilson


    Daphne is an exemplary tutor at Sylvan Learning Center of Atascocita with ten years of experience in education, as a teacher, learning coach, and associate principal. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Secondary Education, a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and is currently pursuing her PhD in Philosophy/Cognition & Learning. She holds teaching certifications in ELA, grades 7-12, as well as an ESL endorsement for grades PK-12. Daphne is a Charismatic, hardworking teacher who is passionate about helping students reach their full potential. Outside of teaching, Daphne enjoys reading and traveling whenever she can. 

    Pamela Josey


    Pamela is a graduate of Paul Quinn College where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree and The University of Houston where she earned a Master’s of Education Degree. She also holds teacher certification for the state of Texas. Pamela loves teaching because she really enjoys helping children appreciate learning and she is especially passionate about helping students understand math. Pamela is a flexible and passionate individual who loves reading, completing puzzles, and spending time with family and friends in her spare time.

    Jasmine Moreno


    Jasmine graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. She is also a Special Education certified teacher in Texas. Jasmine loves teaching because she is able to make an impact on her students. She is kind, helpful, and optimistic and loves reading, baking, and crocheting when she has free time. 

    Ava Howard


    Ava attended and graduated from Texas Southern University and earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Elementary Education with a minor in Reading and English. She is a Texas certified teacher for grades K-8. Ava recently retired after years of teaching in the classroom and now enjoys staying busy helping others. Teaching is a love of Ava’s as she really enjoys watching students become successful. She loves volunteering her time, reading, and watching movies in her free time.
  • Kiarra Windham, CERTIFIED TEACHER

    Kiarra Windham


    Kiarra is a graduate of Texas Southern University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism. She also holds a Texas Teacher Certification. Kiarra really enjoys teaching as she is able to really engage with kids and she loves watching them grow. She feels it is extra special to capture those “aha” moments when they catch on to a concept. She is a very optimistic and energetic person who loves baking, watching documentaries, and visiting museums in her spare time. 

    Vanessa Mares


    Vanessa graduated from Lone Star College in Kingwood. She has had a variety of experiences that include tutoring, substitute teaching, and working as a Physical Therapy Assistant. She discovered her love for teaching and enjoys watching students grow and learn. She is a very compassionate and patient teacher who feels like her students and co-workers are like family. She has many loves outside of teaching, such as knitting, crocheting, painting, and bike riding.

    Victoria is a graduate of Texas State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies. She is also a Texas Certified Teacher. Victoria is an outgoing, motivated, and creative teacher who loves to encourage and engage with students. She enjoys showing students how fun learning can be. In her free time, Victoria loves using her Cricut to make things, doing puzzles, and Lego projects with her family.

    Bryce Newsom


    Bryce graduated from The University of Houston, Clear Lake with a Bachelor of History degree. He has also will obtain his Texas Teaching Certificate very soon. He really loves teaching and enjoys helping students of all ages to better themselves through increased knowledge. Bryce is a very punctual, flexible, and task driven teacher who really enjoys watching/playing baseball and drawing in his free time.

    Stephanie graduated from North Carolina State University with her Bachelors of Science in Education for grades 6-9. After that, she went on to pursue her Masters of Science in Higher Education Administration, as well as her Masters of K-12 Educational Leadership. She is currently an Instructional Specialist for Aldine Independent School District. Stephanie became an educator because she in passionate about advocating for public education. In her spare time she enjoys walking, running, and traveling, and would describe herself as being energetic, and enthusiastic. We are so happy to have her joining our wonderful Sylvan team!

    Kamara Barnett


    Kamara graduated from Jarius Christian College with a Bachelor of Science Degree and went on to earn a Master’s Degree from Texas Women’s University and a Specialist Degree from The University of Houston. She also holds teacher certifications for mathematics in grades 4-8. She loves watching her students learn. She is a very kind and patient educator who enjoys spending time with her family.

    Averi Martin


    Averi graduated from Grand Canyon University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. Averi is so excited about helping students at Sylvan and she loves teaching as she is able to inspire students. She is a very loyal, compassionate, creative, and flexible educator who loves spending her free time with her family and friends. She also enjoys spending time outdoors and she is an excellent photographer in her free time.

    Mayra Martinez


    Mayra graduated from the University of Phoenix with her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration & Management. She has recently decided to make a career change and is now pursuing her Teaching Certification because she wants to make a difference in students’ lives, as so many teachers have done for her. Mayra is compassionate, optimistic, and excited about working with our students here at Sylvan!

    Jzavela Dougherty


    Jzavela graduated from St. Edwards University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. She also has a Master’s Degree in Human Services from the University of Texas and a Doctor of Philosophy in Religion Degree from Universal Life Seminary. She began her career in social work and had opportunities to work in adult education. Over time, she became more involved with teaching children at all levels and she found that to be something she really enjoyed. She considers herself to be empathetic, passionate, and caring. In her free time, she enjoys humanitarian service and outreach, attending concerts, and visiting the theatre and museums.” 
  • Jennifer Moreno, CERTIFIED TEACHER

    Jennifer Moreno


    Jennifer graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology with a minor in Sociology. She has had a variety of experiences, such as working as a legal assistant, a behavioral counselor, and an ESL aide who currently works for Channelview High School. She already holds Special Education Teacher certification and is working on her General Education Certification. She considers herself to be a very calm, kind, and empathetic teacher who loves watching her students learn. When Jennifer has extra time, she really enjoys spending time with animals and reading/writing short stories and plays.

    Michelle is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. She also holds Texas Teacher Certification for Early Childhood, Grades 1-8, and English as a Second Language. Michelle is a very outgoing, friendly, compassionate, and flexible teacher who enjoys reading, traveling, and learning new things. She also enjoys teaching because she feels it gives her the opportunity to see changed lives.

    Fanesea Thompson


    Fanesea is a graduate of Long Beach College of Business and Sothern Technical College. She has been working toward her Texas Special Education teacher certification and will have it very soon. Fanesea is also a Minister and Pastor of Worship. She is a very kind and loving individual who enjoys teaching to assist students in achieving their best. Outside of tutoring at Sylvan, she really enjoys time with her ministry, music, and community outreach.
