Our tutors and staff in Los Angeles consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Los Angeles know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.     Center Director

    As Center Director, Marla oversees the day to day operations for Sylvan of Los Angeles.  A former business owner of a children's clothing boutique, Marla chose a career in the tutoring business because she has a passion for working with kids, and seeing students realize their full potential. Born and raised in the Detroit area, she studied at Michigan State University. When Marla isn't at Sylvan, you'll find her experimenting in the kitchen with her kids, at the movies, or enjoying the outdoors.

    Education Coordinator

    Val has been with Sylvan since 2017 and he loves to engage our students with his creative attitude and sincere appreciation in seeing kids reach their potential. With a Bachelor's Degree in Community Development and Education, from the Philippines and Thailand respectively, Val has been teaching for 30 years. His major outlook in life is to make a difference during the formative years of the students he teaches and mentors. When he is not at Sylvan, you can find Val creating videos in the kitchen, as he is a master chef!
  • Erik Lenington, Teacher

    Erik Lenington


    Erik has recently joined our team from Montana, were he was a music teacher for students in grades K-12.  Erik has many tutoring talents finds his greatest joy teaching kids in grades K-6.  Erik studied at Montana State University.  When he isn't at Sylvan, you'll probably find Erik catching a Dodger's game!

    Chie Dabuet


    Chie is a teacher here at Sylvan Los Angeles, with an exceptional enthusiasm for working with students in grades K-8, Chie always motivates our kids to be their very best.  In Chie's free time, she loves indulging herself in sporty activities such as hiking, walking, and taking Zumba classes. She finds the most joy in spending time with her family.
  • Luis Alvarez, Teacher

    Luis Alvarez


    Luis has been teaching with us here at Sylvan since 2017.  A graduate of USC, Luis has a gift for teaching all grades through high school and is highly skilled in upper level math.  His greatest joy is comparing his students' thoughts to his own when he was their age, and encouraging them to be their best.  When Luis isn't at Sylvan, you'll find him watching stand-up comedy or playing a board or video game.



    Although Kayla recently joined us, her background in tutoring and mentoring elementary students during her university years has helped her adjust well to our Sylvan program. A graduate from Long Beach State, with a degree in Fine Arts Animation. When not at Sylvan, she enjoys hanging out with her two cats, reading novels and comic books, and playing video games. But her passion truly lies in working on her art projects during her spare time. 



    Marnisha has been with our Sylvan Learning Center since August 2019. A Marine Veteran who graduated from Grantham University, she loves sharing with her students all the wonderful things she learned in life, and inspire them to develop and grow and become better individuals. When she is not teaching here at the center, Marnisha spends her free time singing, watching TV, shopping, and traveling. She sees herself as a life-long learner who enjoys learning something, about anything, from everyone. 



    Mike has been a part of the Sylvan family since June 2018. A graduate from UC Sta. Cruz, he has been an LAUSD Middle School Teacher for many years. Mike is a sports enthusiast and could spend hours talking about the topic. During his leisure times, he enjoys swimming, basketball, playing the piano, watching movies, listening to music, or just plain and simply teaching. What he enjoys most in life is to make his students smarter and help guide them in achieving their goals.
