Our tutors and staff in Charleston consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Charleston know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores. We selectively choose tutors who know local curriculum and can link Sylvan lessons to what’s being taught in school. Get to know our tutors and staff in Charleston!

  • Lisa Henthorn, Center Director

    Center Director

    As Center Director, Lisa oversees the financial operations, inquiry calls, testing and conferencing at Sylvan. A former second grade teacher, Lisa chose a career in the tutoring business back in 1991 because of how much Sylvan helped her brother. She studied at the University of Pittsburgh. When Lisa isn't at Sylvan you'll find her spending time with her husband, and two daughters as well as volunteering at her church. Lisa loves horses and roots like crazy for her Pittsburgh Pirates and Penguins!
  • Rosemary Peterson, Director of Education

    Director of Education

    Rosemary has been with Sylvan Learning Center for over 19 years. She says that working at Sylvan is a wonderful job for all teachers, especially retired ones like her! She has taught in both public and private sectors. She was also the middle school coordinator at Charleston Catholic High School. Rosemary received her BA degree from King College in Bristol, Tennessee and recently attended her 50th reunion! She received her MA from Marshall University. Her degrees are in English, History, and Social Studies education. Rosemary and her husband have been married for 50 years! They have four children/spouses and nine grand children! She enjoys scrap-booking, and anything Elvis!

    Donna has been involved in administrative work at the Charleston Sylvan Learning Center since 2000. She believes the center provides a great educational environment for students in several West Virginia counties as well as bordering counties in Kentucky and Ohio. Donna's teaching career started in 1967 when she graduated from Marshall University (Go Herd!) with a degree in Elementary Education, grades 1-8. She has her master's degree plus 45 hours. At the time of retirement, she taught 40 years in Kanawha County Schools.

    Office Administrator

    Christa has been with Sylvan for 14 years. She updates student programs, tests new students, and is office administrator. In the evening, she works at Overbrook Elementary after school care. She attended Highpoint University and West Virginia State University for special education and early elementary education. She is married and has two daughters, a cat, and a dog. She enjoys working with her mother (Rosemary) every day at Sylvan.

    Betty can be found at Sylvan wearing many hats! She teaches, tests new students, conferences, and anything else that is needed. After teaching for 34 years in Kanawha County Schools and the death of her husband, Betty felt lost. When she came to Sylvan she found a "family" full of friends, professionalism, and successful tutoring methods. These methods help students of all ages become confident with themselves, and the world. Betty holds a BA and a MA in Secondary Education. Her best titles are "mom" to two wonderful sons, and "grandmom" to two precious grandsons. Her hobbies include quilting, gardening, sewing, and loving her three cats; Sheriff, Hershey, and Boots.

    Kathie received her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from the University of Charleston and her master's degree from Marshall University. She taught in Kanawha County schools for six years. At Sylvan, Kathie enjoys helping the students achieve their educational goals. At home Kathie enjoys her three cats and her Mal-Shi.  The third cat showed up at her home and decided that he had found a place to live. She enjoys photography and hopes to pursue future opportunities to further her knowledge in that area.

    Jane received her degree in Elementary Education from West Virginia University. She has worked for Kanawha County Schools for 27 years. She has a daughter named Elizabeth. She enjoys playing tennis, and watching WVU play football. She likes working at Sylvan because she loves to watch students grow academically.

    Caleb is a math, coding, and robotics teacher at Sylvan. He also works at Nitro elementary school as a math intervention teacher. He received his Bachelor of Science in education from West Virginia State University in 2014. Caleb enjoys teaching students at Sylvan and public school because he loves to see children learn new skills and he enjoys having the opportunity to positively impact children's lives!

    Richard completed his undergraduate work at Marshall University and his graduate work at Concord University. Richard enjoys the individualized programs at Sylvan and feels it is one of the best ways for a student to learn. When Richard isn't working, he enjoys golf and bowling. He has been married to Tammy Martin for five years, and they have two cats that they adore.

    Christi received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from West Virginia State University.  Her master’s degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Math through Algebra was earned at Marshall University.  She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at Marshall University.  She has been teaching in Kanawha County Schools for 21 years.  She lives with her daughter and enjoys reading, researching, crafts, gardening and listening to 80’s and 90’s music.  Christi feels that being a positive influence in a child’s life is the best thing about being a teacher.

    Christian received his bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Math from West Virginia University.  After graduation, he left his home in Charleston, West Virginia, and moved to Toledo, Ohio.  However, the pull of family and those West Virginia mountains brought him back to Charleston and home.  While in Toledo, he was employed at Sylvan Learning Center.  The experience was so enjoyable, he became a tutor at Sylvan in Charleston, West Virginia.  He enjoys reading, especially fantasy, tennis and table tennis.
  • Sandie Bowen, Tutor

    Sandie Bowen

    Sandie was raised in Saint Albans, West Virginia.   She studied at Barry University and Marshall University.  She graduated with her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education in May of 1998. She then graduated with her master's degree in reading in 2006. Sandie finds the greatest joy in tutoring students in a small group situation. When Sandie isn't at Sylvan, you'll find her reading or spending time with her daughter.
  • Nancy Winefordner, Tutor

    Nancy is a retired Kindergarten teacher from Ruffner Elementary School. While Nancy has many tutoring talents, she finds the greatest joy in beginning reading tutoring.  She  studied at Morris Harvey College and University of WV College of Graduate Studies. When Nancy isn’t at Sylvan of Charleston, you’ll find her enjoying her new grandsons and spending time with her children, her husband, and her cats.
