Our tutors and staff in Danville consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Danville know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.     Susan Westbrook

    Director of Education, Tutor

    Susan oversees the educational programs and assists in managing and training our team of tutors in Danville. Susan, who has taught for more 20 years at the elementary level both in Virginia and internationally, brings a wealth of knowledge to Sylvan of Danville. She graduated from Liberty University with a BS in education. She has three teenage children and enjoys cooking, reading and hanging out with her kids.
  • Chris Pickral, Tutor

    Chris Pickral


    Chris is a veteran teacher and also assists the center in areas of education support and operations. He earned his BA in biology and MAT in teaching from Liberty University. He currently teaches at Hope Academy. When not teaching, Chris enjoys traveling, playing the piano, reading and watching classic movies.
  • Ronnie Mand, Tutor

    Ronnie Mand


    Ronnie is a veteran teacher and verbal SAT specialist for the Danville center with a gift for working with students in all grade levels. She earned her BA in education from American University. She has traveled extensively and has 2 daughters and four grandchildren. When Ronnie isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her volunteering, antiquing and playing bridge.

    Mark Newman


    Mark is a math specialist with the Danville Center, teaching from early elementary through all high school level content. A teacher at Chatham Middle School, Mark received his BS degree from Mary Washington and his MS from Old Dominion. An avid reader, he prefers historical non-fiction and fiction. His hobbies include golf, hiking and travel.

    Linda Yates


    Linda is an elementary school tutor in Pittsylvania County with a gift for working with kids. While Linda has many tutoring talents, she finds the greatest joy in teaching reading. She studied at Averett University, earning a BA in education. When Linda isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her reading, watching sports and going on cruises.

    Susanne Thorpe


    Susanne is a teacher in at Chatham Middle School. She has earned an MAT in curriculum and instruction. When not teaching, Susanne enjoys reading and movies. She grew up in Michigan and is an avid Virginia Tech Hokie fan.
  • Jasmine Holdness, Tutor

    Jasmine Holdness


    Jasmine is a 2nd grade teacher for Danville City Schools. She earned a BS in liberal studies and an M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction from Averett University. When not teaching, Jasmine enjoys collecting, traveling playing with her two dogs and one cat. She is an avid fan of the NBA Cleveland Cavaliers.

    Marianne Oakes


    Marianne has been a kindergarten teacher for 12 year with Danville City Schools. She earned a BS in liberal studies from Averett University. When not teaching, Marianne enjoys cooking, reading Christian-based books and collecting Christmas ornaments. She is an avid fan of the NASCAR and Jimmie Johnson..
  • Amanda Morris, Tutor

    Amanda Morris


    Amanda is one of the Danville center's newer teachers. She joined us after completing her BS in Education with concentrations in lab science and social science from Liberty University. When not teaching, Amanda enjoys reading, crocheting and music. She is a fan of the Atlanta Braves.
  • Cathy Myers, Tutor

    Cathy Myers


    Cathy is an instructor in our Danville Center with a gift for working with kids. While Cathy has many tutoring talents, she finds the greatest joy in reading and math tutoring. She earned her BA from the University of Virginia and a M.Ed. from Longwood. She taught as a Special Education teacher in the Danville City School system for more than 13 years. When Cathy isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her enjoying time with her children or reading.
