Chad Denham

Executive Director

Chad knows firsthand the importance of life lessons and developing skills that are the foundation of countless life tests. His personal challenges as a young man on the south side of Chicago are what have inspired Chad to serve his community. Countless students suffered setbacks throughout the pandemic, and it’s Chad’s focus to help many regain their self-assurance in the classroom and well beyond by combining growth mindset and emotional Intelligence in the instruction of every student. Influenced by four decades of Sylvan Learning that have emboldened K-12 students, Chad’s uniquely targeted approach will help instill grit to reach any student’s goal.

Anna Chanthaphavong

Education Director

Anna researched the issues of student homelessness and food insecurity among the CSUs and presented a briefing memo to a local senator. She further participated in a semester-long program in Sacramento, where she interned with a senator at the state capitol. During that time, Anna attended meetings with different educational groups and assisted with education-related legislation. Anna seeks to conduct education research that targets these critical issues in schools and helps create solutions and policies to address them.

Cynthia Medina

Tutor

Cynthia holds a bachelor’s in secondary education; English, and a master’s in education; literacy, and has had the pleasure of teaching English, ESL, and reading at the middle and high school levels for more than 12 years in New Mexico. San Diego became her home two years ago, and she has been tutoring, and teaching ESL, and English online. When not proudly serving her students, she loves all the great activities that San Diego offers, such as taking long walks, hiking its great trails, and spending time at the beach and the pool. She believes in empowering all children to become strong, loving, and caring individuals, as well as lifelong learners.

Kaitlyn Vogel

Tutor

Kaitlyn graduated with her bachelor’s in English from the University of California, Riverside, in 2018. She then pursued her master’s in English at San Diego State University in 2019. Kaitlyn received her master’s with an emphasis on British Literature in 2021. Although her degree is in British Literature, Kaitlyn taught Rhetoric and Writing Studies throughout her graduate school career at SDSU, where she presently works as a lecturer. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors at the many beautiful beaches, trails, and parks that San Diego has to offer.

Ebony Peralta

Tutor

Ebony has been tutoring for Sylvan for the past three years. An alumna of San Diego State University, she earned a bachelor’s in liberal studies with an emphasis in ethnic studies, joined by a master’s in teaching and a multiple subject teaching credential. Go Aztecs! She has been teaching for six years, and is presently a 7th grade ELA instructor. When not with her students, Emily enjoys time with her husband Nick and her two dogs, Ripley and Bowser.

Alexander Wong

Tutor

Alexander is a recent graduate from UCLA with a bachelor’s in mathematics. He has tutored and taught competition math to kids ranging from elementary through high school. In his free time, Alexander enjoys running, badminton and tennis. He also enjoys chess and solving Rubik’s cubes.

Arthur Chen

Tutor

Arthur is a mathematics tutor, who earned a bachelor’s in operations research at the University of California, Berkeley. He will embark on a master’s in statistics at Stanford University in the fall of 2022. Arthur intends to focus on using statistics for mental illness research and treatment. In his free time, he enjoys drawing and playing piano.
