Great Teachers Inspire

Our tutors and staff in El Cerrito consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in El Cerrito know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.   • Marcia McGee, Center Director

    Marcia McGee

    Center Director

    Marcia joined the Sylvan family in April 2018. She has earned a bachelor’s in psychology, a master’s in public administration and a doctorate in urban education leadership. Marcia also received a credential from CSU Sacramento and retired from the West Contra Costa School District in 2016. Marcia has a wealth of experience in business, sales, public administration and teaching. She taught government at Morgan State, administered federally funded programs, owned a Curtis Mathes electronics franchise in Texas and sold real estate. Marcia has a son and four grandchildren. She loves to play sports, and travel. Marcia is also learning to speak Spanish, play piano and golf.

    Director of Education

    Anthony began teaching for Sylvan of El Cerrito in 2014, and is now the Director of Education. He received his Bachelor of Arts in History, summa cum laude; his teaching credential; and his Master of Education from the University of California Riverside. He has taught Government, and History as a full-time teacher at Rim of the World High School. Anthony believes that teaching is a worthwhile endeavor. He likes engaging with and learning from the constant stream of people and situations that teaching offers. When he is not at Sylvan or sufficiently sedated by his laptop, Anthony enjoys conversing about his latest history, anthropology, and political science readings/audio books.

    Beginning Reading, Academic Reading, Math, Writing and Study Skills Teacher

    Allison attended the University of California, Irvine and California State University, Long Beach. She has degrees in English and Sociology, as well as a Master of Arts in Education, with an emphasis in Childhood Education. She has been teaching for over fifteen years. She has taught middle school and the primary grades, but she enjoys teaching the little ones the best. Cumulatively, Allison has been working for Sylvan for ten years. She previously worked at the centers in Whittier and Long Beach, as a teacher and a Program Manager, and now Allison teaches here, in the El Cerrito Center. 
  • Kyle Kosup, Instructor

    Kyle Kosup

    Instructor

    Kyle Kosup is a veteran instructor at our El Cerrito center. He received his B.A. from UC Santa Cruz and earned his teaching credential from San Francisco State. Kyle has worked as a classroom teacher in the Albany School District, and as a science teacher in the San Francisco Unified School District. More recently, he has used his digital arts skills to help create educational media, including a plate tectonics video for The California Academy of Science, and interactive exhibits for the Maui Ocean Center and San Francisco Treasury Museum. The video exhibits that he helped produce can currently be viewed at the Bay Aquarium at Pier 39.
  • Moira Manchouck, Instructor

    Moira Manchouck

    Instructor

    Moira joined the Sylvan family at the beginning of 2017. She earned her Bachelor’s degree is in liberal Arts/Cultural Studies followed by her Master’s degree is in Consciousness Studies/Psychology. Moira enjoys bringing the wonders of literature to life in the classroom by engaging students in the practice of clear and effective reading, writing, and speaking skills. She is a long time educator, having taught 7th and 8th grade English at number of schools for the past 7 + years. In addition to teaching at Sylvan, Moira currently works as a long term substitute teacher for at Tara Hills Elementary.
  • Pat Ryle, Instructor

    Pat Ryle

    Instructor

    Pat is a seasoned multi-subject instructor. After graduating from New College of California, he got his teaching credential from S.F. State. Since then, Pat has taught for over 20 years, with the last 10 here at Sylvan in El Cerrito. He enjoys teaching math, reading, and writing to elementary and middle school students. In his spare time, Pat loves reading, watching the Manchester United Football Club, and spending time with his grandkids.
  • Samantha Martinez, Instructor

    Samantha Martinez

    Instructor

    Samantha joined our Sylvan family in 2016 as one of the English, Writing and Math teachers. Though born in the Bay Area, she grew up in the Sierra Foothills of Amador County. After high school, Samantha attended Solano Community College to study accounting. While at Solano, she worked for the Solano County Library system and found a passion for literacy and life long learning. She currently teaches the Math Edge program and Coding class at Sylvan of El Cerrito.  In her spare time, Samantha likes to read, attend opera and other performances in the city, going to art, craft and music festivals and researching her family history on Ancestry.com.
  • Karolyn Langston, Teacher

    Karolyn Langston

    Teacher

    Karolyn is a Richmond native and attended Richmond's public schools. Karolyn is the only child of Richmond's first African American teacher, Hattie Langston. Following this legacy, Karolyn spent 25 years working in State Preschool, Teen Parents and spent many years as a Counselor and Parenting Class Facilitator in Residential Drug and Alcohol Treatment for Women and Children. Karolyn finally came to WCCUSD in 1999 and taught Middle and Elementary school. She retired in 2018. She came to Sylvan in 2016 with the goal of helping students reach their full learning potential in a smaller setting with often one-on-one help. Karolyn enjoys cooking, flea marketing and helping out at her Church.
  • Linda Jolivet, Instructor

    Linda Jolivet

    Instructor

    Linda graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, and has enjoyed a career in teaching. Her passion for teaching has lead her through both public schools and private institutions. Linda loves seeing the "light-bulb moment" in her students when they finally understand something that was difficult to them. When Linda isn't teaching in El Cerrito, she enjoys reading, storytelling, and walking near the Bay.
