Our tutors and staff in Fairfield consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Fairfield know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.     John Wright

    Center Director

    John manages all administrative functions of the center while empowering staff, students and parents to reach their potential within the Sylvan Model.
    He and his small family recently relocated from Seattle, Washington to Northern California and he is a native of Texas where he earned a B.A. degree.  He also attended graduate school at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas  before completing his Master of Arts degree in Berkeley, California.
    John spends as much time as he can traveling and trying new foods with his wife Tammie and their 5 1/2 year old daughter Madison.
  • Melissa, Director of Education


    Director of Education

    As the Director of Education, Melissa L. Knox manages academic programs, provides support to Sylvan's families and to our team of instructors. Melissa graduated from the University California, Los Angeles with a B.A in English and received a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate from the University California, Davis in Gender and Global Issues. She has over ten years of experience working in Special Education and is passionate about students reaching their highest potential. When Melissa is not at the center, she enjoys taking creative writing courses, and spending time with her three dogs. 
  • Amytra, Instructor



    Amytra graduated from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, earning her Bachelor's of Science in Journalism degree with public relations concentration and technical writing certificate. Amytra works full time for a global supply chain company as a compliance specialist. She is also a teaching artist bringing Disney Musicals to elementary schools. Amytra studies method acting, singing, and screenwriting. She is currently recording her first full length CD of original music. As an instructor at Sylvan, Amytra intends to use her experience, skills, education and passion for the arts and learning to inspire students to feel safe, confident and eager to explore their potential.
  • Jonathan , Instructor



     Jonathan graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a Bachelor of Arts in Computational Mathematics. He currently works with 2nd grade, 4th grade, and middle school at Sonoma Charter School as part of his plan of becoming a licensed classroom teacher. As a mathematician and instructor at Sylvan, he views math not as a tedious process, but as a puzzle or game. His goal this year is to relate math to the students in a fun, exciting way. "I plan to guide the students through questions and step-by-step until they have a lightbulb moment and get to the answer themselves. I want to inspire their growth, discovery, wonder, and curiosity to further their math skills and education in general."
  • Cristina, Instructor



    Cristina graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. She continually takes child development classes to hone her knowledge in the growth and development of the “whole child” and how they learn. Creating a positive and supportive learning environment is her greatest passion. She currently teaches preschool with a rambunctious group of children. When not working she loves spending time with her husband and two kids, hiking and exploring new places.
  • Doug, Instructor



    Doug went to both San Francisco State  University and Sacramento State University.  He received a Bachelor of Arts and minored in Mathematics.
    His Hobbies include music, literature and art.  When not teaching he can be found visiting museums, he loves the zoo and attends lots of live performances.  Spending time with his family is also a top priority for Doug.
  • Solange, Instructor



    Solange recently graduated  from San Jose State University with a B.A. in Linguistics.  She is currently in pursuit of becoming a K-8 Teacher! When she is not preparing for post grad applications you may find her dancing at the local Salsa Club or reading at the nearest coffee shop.  She is glad to be a part of the Sylvan Team so that she may participate in the growth of students and see their successes.
  • Jairon, Instructor



    Jairon attended Armijo in 2013  and was offered a football scholarship to attend South Dakota State University.  During college he majored in Exercise Science while interning with the school's athletic training staff.  He has worked as a substitute teacher  in the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District before teaching PE at Rodriguez High School for two years.  He is currently pursuing a Masters in Education.  In his free time he coaches football at Rodriguez High School.
  • Andrew, Instructor



    Andrew is a Math Teacher at Rodriguez High School.  In addition he coaches JV Football there as well.  Working at Sylvan is a pleasure for him as it allows him to connect with students outside of the classroom.

    Jose is a graduate of Sacramento State University with a degree in Business Accounting.  His goal is to become a full-time teacher in a dual mission school.  He enjoys learning new things and reading most of all.  His favorite author is Paulo Coelho.  He also likes Don Miguel Ruiz, Author of "The Four Agreements."
  • Jesse, Instructor



    Jesse is  a High School History Teacher at Rodriguez High School.  He also runs the AVID Program.  He enjoys working with kids who want to learn and in his spare time you can find him working with the Rodriguez Mustang Football Team, watching sports  or binging on Netflix.
