    Lauren Richards


    Lauren has worked at Sylvan for over 8 years and has multiple teaching certifications from Texas State University. She is a member of the BIE Partnership Advisory Committee for FCCPS and truly enjoys meeting new families and helping students find success and joy in learning. She enjoys spending time with her husband Mike and pup, Reagan & is expecting her first child in April, a baby boy.

    Executive Director

    Scott has over fifteen years of experience with Sylvan Learning. Recently, Scott spent several years in the Middle East opening new Sylvan centers. As a director, Scott enjoys meeting new families to determine their tutoring needs. A native of Alabama, he has lived in the DC Metro area for over thirteen years. Scott enjoys traveling, reading on the beach and Alabama football: Roll Tide

    Allie is graduate student of George Mason University and currently teaching at Robinson High. She was an AVID lead tutor(college prep program in Fairfax County Public Schools) for 3 years. In her free time, she enjoys watching & playing sports, working out, traveling and hanging out with friends.

    Lead Center Assistant

    Bethany is currently a Kindergarten Instructional Assistant with Fairfax County Public Schools. She is working on finishing her Associates in Psychology and wants to get her Bachelors and Masters in Social Work. In her free time, she enjoys watching sports, reading, snuggling with her cats, and hanging out with friends and family.

    Center Assistant

    Emily is one of our fantastic center assistants in Falls Church! She recently graduated from George Mason University obtaining a B.S. in Biology, and wants to pursue her master's degree in Environmental Science. When she's not at Sylvan, she enjoys reading, traveling, and binge-watching true crime shows.

    Mitzi is also a graduate student at George Mason University. Her area of focus is educational policy. In her spare time, she loves reading, writing, her cats & she has a bunny and two parrots! :)
  • Kay Van Hoven, Tutor

    Kay Van Hoven


    Kay has over 9 years experience as a Sylvan certified teacher. She teaches Beginning Reading, Reading, Writing, Math, SAT/ACT English and Study Skills. She taught K-3 gifted and talented students and provided teacher professional development for 16 years in Potiac, MI. Kay loves to travel, read and sing in the McLean Chorale.

    Vernon Fentress


    Vernon has over ten years of experience with Sylvan and specializes in math, including higher level mathematics and SAT/ACT Math Prep. He holds a Masters Degree in Engineering and helps his wife run a local health spa in his spare time.
  • Chandra Ranade, Tutor

    Chandra Ranade


    Chandra has a Master of Statistics from the Indian Statistical Institute and a Ph. d. from Cornell University in Economics. He also has a Master of Arts in Teaching from Johns Hopkins University to teach Secondary level mathematics. He has been teaching mathematics in high schools and Universities, including Sylvan, since 2002. Prior to that he worked for the World Bank in Washington DC.

    Julie Eslinger


    Julie graduated from Penn State with a degree in Secondary Education- Social Studies and History. She has also worked as an assistant and substitute for teachers in Fairfax County Public Schools. She enjoys working with elementary age students all the way through high school and has worked for Sylvan Learning for over 8 years and also assists with tutoring at the Alexandria location.

    Rhyan Wong

    Tutor/STEM Instructor

    Rhyan has 10+ years of teaching experience and has taught students ranging from 2 thru 14. She has worked in both the public and private sector, teaching gifted students. Rhyan holds a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education & a Masters degree in Instructional Technology. She also enjoys teaching Sylvan STEM camps during the summer. In her free time, Rhyan enjoys playing the piano and researching the latest educational trends of today.

    Ignatzia Kaldahl


    Currently teaching English at T. C. WIlliams, Ignatzia works to imbue students with empathy and foster global citizenship. Outside of the classroom, she struggles to keep plants alive, reads whenever she can manage, and dreams of becoming a beekeeper!

    Jodi Bochert


    Jodi has a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Master's degree in Special Education, both from Liberty University. She has taught Kinder, 1st grade, & 4th grade in the Dallas, TX area as well as in both Prince William County Public Schools & Fairfax County Public Schools. Currently, she is a substitute teacher, and spends the rest of the days being a Stay at Home mom to her two preschool-aged children. She teaches Beginning Reading, Reading, Writing, Math, and Study Skills at Sylvan. When not at Sylvan working with students, Jodi loves to spend time with her family.

    Malaika Johnson

    Lead Tutor

    Malaika is an engineer in Arlington, VA with a gift for working with kids. While Malaika has many tutoring talents, she finds the greatest joy in Mathematics, SAT, and ACT tutoring. She has degrees in BS Engineering, MBA & MPS Real Estate from Western Michigan University, University of Detroit-Mercy, and Georgetown University . When Malaika isn’t at Sylvan Alexandria, you’ll find her at the a movie theater, library, or spending time with family and friends
  • Monica Osborn, Tutor

    Monica Osborn


    Monica is a tutor at Sylvan of Alexandria and a current 5th grade math teacher in Alexandria Public School District. She teaches reading, math, writing and study skills and has a knack for teaching kids the WHY behind the Math! She has a Bachelors of Science in Education from Northern Illinois University and has been with Sylvan for over 3 years.
  • Pamela Davis, Tutor

    Pamela Davis


    Pam has been a teacher with Prince Georges County for 13 years. She is certified 1st through Middle school. She's taught every subject, and just started last summer at Sylvan of Alexandria (and currently enjoying it as well)!! Ms. Pam is currently pursuing her Masters at Bowie State University.
