Our tutors and staff in Federal Way consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Federal Way know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.     Director of Education

    Darcy has worked for Sylvan since 1991, becoming the owner of the Federal Way center in 2000. What does she love most about working at Sylvan? The chance to give families hope and to change the trajectory of a child's life, one family at a time. She has a B.A. in Communication Arts and an M.A. in Education from Austin College in Sherman, TX. She taught 4th and 6th grade in Texas before returning to her native Washington. Darcy and her family moved to Federal Way in 2002, having learned that Federal Way is indeed, as it is touted, a great place to live, work, and play.

    Nick Hoskins

    Center Director

    Nick started with Sylvan in the Summer 2019. One of the most enjoyable points of being at Sylvan is being a part of an individual’s growth in multiple areas. He has a B.A. in Project Management, a M.S. in Information Technology Management and a M.S. Certification in Networking and Telecommunications from Colorado Technical University in Colorado Spring, CO. Most of his career has been centered primarily on business operations management and sales operations. Unlike many that migrate to the PNW, his was not by choice, but instead required by a previous employer. He is an avid angler and outdoorsman; by having this passion the acclimation and transition to PNW life was a tempered one.
  • Pat Farmer, Teacher

    Pat Farmer


    Pat is a retired elementary teacher in Federal Way, WA with a gift for working with kids. While Pat has many tutoring talents, she finds the greatest joy in reading tutoring. She studied Elementary Education at Bowling Green University in Ohio. When Pat isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her going to the theater, rooting for her favorite Duke basketball team, and spending lots of time with her granddaughter Hannah .

    LeeAnn Hardt


    LeeAnn is a teacher in Federal Way, WA with a gift for working with kids. While LeeAnn has many tutoring talents, she finds the greatest joy in reading tutoring. She studied at the University of Montana. When LeeAnn isn't at Sylvan, you’ll find her sewing, reminiscing about her travels through Europe, or reading Christian novels and murder-mysteries.

    Benita Slaeker


    Benita enjoys building relationship with her students and the satisfactions of seeing them achieve their goals while improving their confidence. Her hobbies include painting in acrylics, genealogy research, World History and mostly US History. One of favorite places to visit is Ireland. The sheer beauty of the natural landscapes including the cliffs. There is a rich and intriguing history with some physical representations remaining in the forms of old castles, monasteries and churches. Benita attained her credentials from Central Washington University.

    Brittany Barber


    Brittany is Philadelphia native who received her bachelor’s degree from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and her teaching certificate from the University of Washington. Her teaching enjoyments encompass assisting students reach their full academic potential and tackling new challenges. She enjoys yoga, watching and/or listening to baseball games. Brittany also enjoys reading, exploring The Great Northwest, traveling across the country and spending time with friends. She is a big sports fan, supporting the Eagles and the Nationals…that’s ok we don’t hold it again her!

    Erin Woodard


    Erin hails from the Northern Nevada area and possesses Master of Education in Professional School Counseling. One of the places she enjoys to visit is also a place where she lived which is San Francisco which she describes as an eclectic mix of culture, art, cuisine and people. Erin enjoys reading murder mystery books, hiking and good coffee. Her love for being a teacher comes from when a student finally understands a concept that they have been struggling with, the gaining of confidence, and watching students reach their full potential.

    Nicole Smith


    Nicole is our home-grown teacher. She possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education from Central Washington University. She enjoys traveling to Hawaii for the warm weather, beautiful oceans and the laid-back feel-good vibe. In her spare time, she adores craft making and particularly loves working with her Cricut machine. Nicole also enjoys watching football. When she reads for leisure, her joy can be found in the Mystery and Crime genre and reading age appropriate books to her daughter. Nicole’s love for teaching comes from being a part of a child’s growth during their early stages of life and in the building of a solid academic foundation.

    Jennifer Kayner


    Jennifer is a home-grown teacher with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Brigham Young University and a Secondary Science Teaching certificate from the University of Washington. When it comes to traveling, her home away from home is Arch Cape, OR, a place she travels to once a year since childhood. Jennifer’s hobbies include playing volleyball, hiking/camping and rock climbing. When she is taking it easy, she prefers to immerse herself in science fiction and fantasy novels with her favorite of all time being the Honor Harrington Series. Jennifer finds it rewarding to make a positive impact in students learning.
