Welcome to Sylvan Learning Center! My name is Kent Kolbow, and I am the Owner and one of the Directors. I received my college education in Fort Wayne, Indiana. During my educational experience, I completed a bachelor's degree in Math with a strong background in Physics, Chemistry, and Psychology. I also earned an endorsement in education. During college, I taught at Sylvan Learning centers in Fort Wayne, and within a few years, became the Director. In 1997, I decided to purchase the Sylvan centers in Elkhart and Mishawaka. I have since had the opportunity to purchase nine additional centers in Indiana. My goal through working with Sylvan is “Success with Every Student.”

    Hannah Wampler

    Director of Student Advancement

Hannah has been with Sylvan since August 2019. She started as a teacher, and has been a director since November 2019. Hannah attended Ball State University, where she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in English Language Arts Education and a Master’s Degree in English Language Studies. Hannah’s teaching experience includes tutoring at the Ball State Writing Center, teaching 7th and 8th grades, and working as an instructor at Ivy Tech. She has worked with students of all ages and specializes in upper and lower level reading and writing. She currently resides in Carmel with her husband and when not at Sylvan enjoys reading, painting, and spending time outside. While in school as a student herself, Hannah’s favorite subjects were English, Social Studies, and Political Studies. She has gratitude for her high school English teacher, Mrs. Gray, who showed her how meaningful learning can be when you connect what you are learning in school to what you do in life. Hannah enjoys passing on the best advice she’s received: do your best, so that when it’s over you can honestly say, “I tried my best!” Hannah is thankful to have a job that allows her to work with such fantastic people. As an educator, she is excited to work with programs designed to genuinely help students and for a company that aligns with her personal pedagogy!
  • Abby Steffen, Director of New Family Engagement

    Abby Steffen

    Director of New Family Engagement

Abby has been with Sylvan since September 2020. Abby is originally from Indianapolis and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Southern Indiana. She has much experience, both as a teacher and administrator in education. Abby began her career as a kindergarten teacher. After teaching for a few years, she moved into an administrative role and spent almost 15 years working as an Executive Director in an Early Childhood Education setting. She has a vast background that includes curriculum development, classroom management, and educator training. She also works as a volunteer for Make-A-Wish (Ohio, Kentucky, & Indiana) and serves as a Wish Granter for this great organization. She credits her love of teaching to her 3rd grade teacher, who encouraged her early creativity and love of literature and art, as well as her supervising teacher (when she was a very “green” student teacher), who encouraged her to find her confidence and voice as an instructor. Abby resides in Noblesville with her husband, Andy, and their lovable dog, Bonita. She enjoys traveling, cheesy 80s movies, laughing, and reading. Abby enjoys being a part of Sylvan because it enables her to create connections with students and families and build relationships that encourage both confidence and academic success with each student!

I graduated from Ball State University with a degree in Elementary Education and completed my Master's degree for Reading Specialty. Reading is one of my favorite things to do and share with others. I come from a two-teacher parent family and school was always a priority in my life. I love passing along the love of learning, especially reading, to my students. Sylvan combines learning and fun, so it is a great place to do what I love! When I'm not at Sylvan, you'll find me reading, spending time with family, and singing in the choir.

I was born and raised in Southern California.  I received my undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara and earned my master's degree and teaching license from Sierra Nevada College.  My husband and I moved to Indiana with our daughters  2 1/2 years ago from Las Vegas, Nevada. I have 11 years teaching experience at the elementary level, and am currently teaching computers.  I love watching students explore what they don't know and watching the "light bulb" come on when they understand something new that has been taught to them.  In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and exploring new areas or towns in Indiana.
