Our tutors and staff in Gainesville consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Gainesville know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.     Owner/Executive Director

    Gilley has worked in education since 1995. She decided to resign from her classroom with the Sumter County School District to become a Sylvan franchisee. She wanted to reach out to more students and create a pleasant working environment for her fellow teachers. Her enthusiasm towards learning encourages all of the teachers to go above and beyond with their lessons. Gilley’s guidance has made the Sylvan learning environment fun and rewarding. She is a dedicated owner who strives to help each and every student who walks through the door.

    Center Director

    Lee joined the Sylvan Gainesville team as center director in the fall of 2014 and has quickly become a strong leader.  Lee has worked in education for 12 years and enjoys the opportunity to help each child grow, learn, and see success. He enjoys the opportunity to meet with parents and find the program that best fits each student’s needs. Lee also works closely with community leaders to help bring Sylvan into our Gainesville and Ocala communities. In his free time, Lee enjoys hockey, curling and baseball.

    College Prep Program Manager/Tutor

    Shelley joined the Sylvan Gainesville team in fall of 2010. She teaches Sylvan’s Math Essentials, Geometry, Algebra 1 and 2, Study Skills, ACT/SAT Prep programs. She has helped dozens of students feel better about homework, school, and themselves. When not teaching, Shelley can often be found riding her unicycle and has participated in unicycle festivals all over the country.
  • Diane Winchester Busch, Tutor

    Diane Winchester Busch


    Diane joined the Sylvan Gainesville team in 2009. She teaches our Academic Reading, Math Essentials, Geometry, Algebra 1-2, Study Skills and HW support programs. Diane earned her Bachelors of Science in Physics from Stetson University and a Masters in Secondary Science with graduate work in computers from UF. While teaching Mathematics, Science, and Technology for 35 years, she helped found the Nursing Academy at GHS.She also taught Medical Math and College Prep for SFC. Diane believes teaching is worth the hard work and long hours. She enjoys helping a student have an "aha" moment when they see a pattern or put the mental puzzle together.  She spends all of her spare time with family.

    Irene Newsome


    Irene joined the Sylvan Gainesville team in the fall of 2004. She teaches Sylvan’s Academic Reading, Advanced Reading, Math Essentials, Geometry, Algebra, Study Skills, and ACT/SAT prep programs. Irene taught high school mathematics for 31 years in Central Florida. Irene loves to teach, and better yet, she loves teaching at Sylvan - and it shows. She is so happy to see our students gain not only knowledge, but confidence in themselves.
  • John 'Jack' Gregory, Tutor

    John 'Jack' Gregory


    Jack joined the Sylvan of Gainesville team in April of 2015.  Although he is new to the education field, he has a lot of experience working with children and the Sciences of STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math). Jack is currently studying mechanical engineering at UF.  He enjoys exploring math and science and likes to spread his love for technology to his students.  Jack’s favorite aspect about working at sylvan is seeing his student abilities grow and progress.
  • Melissa Carney, Tutor

    Melissa Carney


    Melissa joined the Sylvan Learning of Gainesville team in the summer of 2015.  After graduating from University of Florida in 2010, she has taught first and third grade in both Orlando and Gainesville. She has also tutored fourth-graders in after school programs. No matter what age she is teaching, she strongly believes in hands-on learning and developing a caring relationship with students. When not teaching, she enjoys listening to/making music and playing with her two kitties.
