    Director of Education

    Darcy oversees the educational integrity of our programs, managing and training our team of tutors in Goodyear and Surprise . A former middle school teacher in Phoenix , Darcy brings a wealth of knowledge to Sylvan of Goodyear and Surprise. She graduated from Western Governors University. When Darcy isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her swimming, gardening, crafting and scouting.
  • Joe and Claudia Honsberger, Owner

    Joe and Claudia Honsberger


    Joe and Claudia Honsberger are former New York school teachers. Together they have a combined experience of over 60 years teaching. Joe and Claudia moved to AZ in 1997 to open Sylvan Learning Center in Goodyear, AZ. They both have an incredible passion for children and education, with a goal that each child might have a spark ignited with a love for learning. When Joe and Claudia aren't at Sylvan you will find them singing in the choir, playing hand bells or just being grandparents. 
  • Patrick Centner, Math Teacher - Surprise

    Math Teacher - Surprise

    Patrick is a high school math teacher in Tolleson, AZ with a passion for working with kids. While Patrick has many tutoring talents, he finds the greatest joy in Algebra, Geometry, College Algebra, SAT/ACT Math Prep, and basic math tutoring. He graduated with a Masters Degree from Arizona State University as well as Northern Arizona University . When Patrick isn't at Sylvan of Surprise you’ll find him spending time with his family, hiking, or reading.
  • McKinleigh Bernardi, Lead Teacher

    McKinleigh Bernardi

    Lead Teacher

    McKinleigh currently teaches Algebra 1 at a local high school. She graduated with dual degrees in education and psychology from Oregon State University. She has also taught fourth grade, subbed K-8 grade and been a paraprofessional in a variety of high school math classes. She strives to pass on her love of learning to each student she encounters.

    Monica Allsup


    I currently teach third grade, but will be moving to first grade for the 2020-2021 school year. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary and Special Education from Iowa State University and a Master of Social Work, with in emphasis in children and families, from University of Missouri-St. Louis. I moved to AZ in July of 2017 to teach and escape the cold weather!! I am an avid St. Louis Blues hockey fan! When I am not teaching, you can catch me outside enjoying the sun!!

    My name is Adina Myers. I have been a Sylvan teacher for 4 years. Currently I am an Exceptional Student Services teacher at Millennium High School where I have co-taught English, World History, and Geometry. I have two adult children Jesse and Channah, both graduates from Desert Edge High School and both attending Grand Canyon University. I love teaching at Sylvan - the students are amazing and always ready to learn. They make being a teacher worth it!

    Gabriella Ketcham is a veteran special education teacher with 25+ years of experience in the education system. She enjoys teaching all grade levels and especially those students with special needs. In her free time she enjoys traveling with her three teenaged children.

    Pam Butherus


    Pam Butherus is a teacher in Goodyear, Az with a gift for working with kids. While Pam has many tutoring talents, she finds the greatest joy in ELA tutoring. She studied at Western Oregon University. When Pam isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her working on her crafts.

    Martha Bell


    Ms. Martha is a teacher in Goodyear, AZ with a gift for working with kids. While Ms. Martha has many tutoring talents, she finds the greatest joy in tutoring Reading. She studied at San Diego State University. When Ms. Martha isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her enjoying the outdoors with her horses.
