Our tutors and staff in Greenville consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Greenville know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.     Executive Director / Franchisee

    Executive Director and Franchisee of 7 locations, Amy Gardner currently leads the wonderful educational team for Sylvan of Greenville. After 20+ years in the telecom industry, Amy moved back from Alaska to purchase 3 existing Sylvan Learning locations. 4 locations have since been added to the Gardner Learning Centers franchise locations, each making a difference in the lives of so many families. Amy graduated from Lambuth University in Jackson, TN, with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a minor in music. It’s a family business you will often see her children (Daniel, Callie & Caleb) in the center(s) helping out in some way or another.

    Bev Harcum served as the Center Director and Director of Education in Richmond, VA for 15 years. An unexpected move to Greenville brought her to our location where she now serves as an Education Consultant and Director of Education. Bev spends much of her day at Sylvan consulting by phone with families throughout the Upstate regarding their tutoring needs. She welcomes questions and concerns from parents regarding their student's academic needs and achievement.

    Director of Education

    As Director of Education, Tanisha works in conjunction with the Center Director to manage growth opportunities and execute off-site instruction and seminars for Sylvan of Greenville. A former teacher, Tanisha chose a career in the tutoring business because she wanted to be a part of helping students build skills needed to succeed in school. She studied at Valdosta State University. When Tanisha is not at Sylvan, you will find her reading or spending time with her family.

    Karen Weinberg holds South Carolina certifications in Early, Elementary, and Special Education. A graduate of Washington State University, Karen taught in Maine for several years before relocating with her family to South Carolina. Karen enjoys the beach and watching her sons play soccer.
  • Dr. Jeff French, INSTRUCTOR

    Dr. Jeff French

    INSTRUCTOR

    Jeff French graduated from Furman University in 1995 and spent the next 12 years in a variety of college-level roles as a continuing student, graduate student, program coordinator, and instructor for the University of South Carolina (full time) and Midlands Technical College (part-time). He was also a zookeeper at Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC. With a focus on genetics and ecology, Dr. French finished his graduate work in biology and moved to a full-time teaching position at North Greenville University in 2007, now serving as Chair of Biology and Assistant Dean of Science and Math. His family lives in Greer, SC, and he tutors part-time for Sylvan in SylvanPrep, Math and Algebra Edge, as well as upper-level math and science support.

    Sara Beth Gilbert is a teacher in Greenville, SC with a gift for working with kids. While Sara Beth has many tutoring talents, she finds the greatest joy in reading. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from Lander University and a Master of Arts in Teaching with an Emphasis in Early Childhood Education from Converse College. When Sara Beth isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her teaching first grade at Bethel Elementary School. She enjoys craft projects, reading, going to the beach, and watching baseball and football.  
  • Bonnie Walker, INSTRUCTOR

    Bonnie Walker

    INSTRUCTOR

    Bonnie Walker is a retired teacher from Ohio, with a gift for working with kids. She planned programs for the Old Stone Schoolhouse Museum in Concord, Ohio while working at Riverside Local Schools. While Bonnie has many tutoring talents, she finds the greatest joy in teaching is reading and writing. She has a BA in Communications from Lake Erie College and a post-baccalaureate from Notre Dame of Ohio in Education. When she isn't at Sylvan, you'll find her canning fresh vegetables and making jams from her husband's garden.

    Betsy is a tutor at our Greenville location, and has long enjoyed working with Sylvan to help children strengthen skills in reading and math! She graduated with an Early Childhood Education degree, has a Bachelor of Science from Temple University, and when she isn’t working, Betsy enjoys fitness, animals, and reading! 
  • Jim Stauner, INSTRUCTOR

    Jim Stauner

    INSTRUCTOR

    Jim served 32 years in the Air Force, including the Air National Guard. Jim’s teaching career started in Honduras, a remote mountainous village. While there, numerous Honduran Army personnel approached him to teach them English to better communicate with the US Military. He continued teaching wherever deployed! After Jim retired, he obtained his M.ED. from Concordia University and a BS degree in Geological Sciences from Bradly University. In his spare time, Jim enjoys the outdoors, his two dogs, Schnitzel & Piglet, and an African Grey parrot, Harpo.

    Dianne is a veteran Elementary teacher of 34 years. She recently moved to Greenville, and we are so glad to welcome her here to help our growing readers and math students! Dianne enjoys making and selling jewelry at craft fairs, shopping, and spending time with family.

    Amber graduated from Clemson with a Masters of Arts in teaching. She has enjoyed positions doing this in Anderson and Mauldin middle schools, and continues that passion with helping students here at Sylvan! When she is at home, Amber loves on her 18 month old daughter, Ava, and continues hobbies such as cooking and gardening.

    Kat’s background is in Early Childhood Education. She got a Bachelor of Science at Mount Saint Mary College in NY, with psychology and a teacher education program specializing in Learning Disabilities. She has helped with early intervention, tutoring, and was on the Greenville County’s Special Needs Board as well. Kat is a fun and enthusiastic tutor who truly loves helping kids overcome. When not at Sylvan, her hobbies include traveling, shopping, and watching Netflix Christmas movies. Most of all, she adores being mom to her two kids (ages 16 and 25), and their dog, Axel!

    Jack is an IMPRESSIVE instructor in our Greenville center. He is also working towards a degree in Secondary Education, in History. His GRAND tutoring experience includes math, science, STEM, and Robotics. He loves inspiring young minds. Interesting facts about Jack include his ability to speak German and Spanish. In his spare time, he plays the trumpet, mellophone, and baritone horn. Jack also enjoys board games and hiking!

    Jennifer is a 3rd-grade teacher at Belton Elementary School in Anderson, SC. She graduated from Clemson University, is Orton-Gillingham trained, and enjoys tutoring students to help them do their best! In her spare time, she loves baking everything sweet, running, reading books, and taking care of her 3 pets.

    Larissa graduated from Presbyterian College with a degree in Secondary Mathematics Education with a minor in Psychology. She has 6 years of experience teaching high school math and tutoring. Larissa enjoys tutoring as it gives her the ability to work closely with students. She has experience tutoring a variety of concepts including those found in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. In her downtime, Larissa enjoys baking and reading.

    Breanne Murrell is a senior at Clemson University. She is currently majoring in Secondary Math Education. Breanne’s ultimate goal is to work with 6th through 8th graders in a middle school. She is so thankful to have this experience and to help these students succeed.
