Great Teachers Inspire

Our tutors and staff in Harlingen consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Harlingen know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.     Center Director

    Beatriz “Betty” Mendoza is the Center Director in our Harlingen Center. Betty attended the Universidad de las Americas and later earned her bachelor's degree in English from the University of Phoenix. She joined the Sylvan RGV team in 2010. Betty loves the way the Sylvan writing programs allow students to discover their creative side and use their imagination for essay writing. Her favorite book is The Little Prince. Betty loves this quotation by Deepak Chopra: "In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you.”  Betty's favorite thing about working at Sylvan is "seeing children walk in and out with smiles on their faces."

    Katia is an educational consultant in our Harlingen center with a gift for working with kids. Sylvan students call her "Miss Katia." While Katia has many tutoring talents, she finds the greatest joy in math tutoring. She is currently working on a degree in Math from the Univ. of Texas RGV.  Katia enjoys "seeing the students succeed and their excitement every time they know they accomplished something new!" When Katia isn't at Sylvan, you'll find her at the island or with family.

    Yuko Garcia is the Director of Contract Services, works with school districts through the RGV. Yuko graduated from UTRGV with a BA in International Business and MBA. For the last 19 years she has been working in the field of education making a positive impact in student’s lives and continuing to foster the next generation of leaders. Her favorite thing about working at Sylvan is “seeing student’s academic growth and knowing that we are making a difference with our kids. They are our future leaders!"
  • Krystal Chappell, Territory Director

    Territory Director

    Krystal Chappell is the Territory Director for the RGV. Students call her "Krystal," "Principal," or "Tia (Aunt) Krystal." Krystal graduated from the Univ. of Texas-Pan American with a bachelor's in business marketing and a minor in management. She also holds an MBA from UT-RGV. Krystal began her career at Sylvan in 2006. Krystal has five years of teaching experience. Her favorite movie is "The Wizard of Oz." Two of her favorite books are "The Great Gatsby," and "The Greatest Salesman in the World." Krystal enjoys going to the beach and to concerts and walking in the park with her husband and poodles Rocko and Rolla.  



    Our director of sales and marketing is Jessica Galloso. Jessica oversees all sales activities involving Sylvan contracts, as well as our retail marketing and PR events. Jessica graduated from Texas Women's Univ. with a BS in rehabilitative services and from the Univ. of Texas-Pan American with a master's in rehabilitation counseling. Before joining Sylvan in 2011, Jessica worked as a counselor and owned a Learning Express franchise. She taught for six years. "I enjoy being a part of a team of educators who create a positive and personal learning experience for each student. I also love the connections I have been able to form with families and with schools in our community." 



    Yuko Garcia is the director of contract services for Sylvan Learning RGV. She works with school districts throughout the RGV. Yuko graduated from the Univ. of Texas-Pan American with a BA in international business and with an MBA. She worked as a teacher for 11 years before joining Sylvan in 2002. Yuko's favorite movie is "007," and her favorite book is "The Help." Yuko loves this quotation by Daisaku Ikeda: "There is no one as strong as a person whose heart is always filled with gratitude." Yuko's favorite thing about working at Sylvan is "seeing students' academic growth and knowing that we are making a difference with our kids. They are our future leaders."



    Alma Uribe is our program manager for school partnerships. Alma graduated from the Univ. of Texas-Pan American with a bachelor's in interdisciplinary studies and in English. She holds a teaching certificate in education, bilingual EC-4. Alma has over 10 years of teaching experience. Prior to coming to work for Sylvan RGV in 2006, Alma worked at First National Bank. Alma is happy Sylvan offers a Study Skills course "because it equips students with the foundational tools necessary to begin their walk toward academic success." Alma's favorite movie is "Bambi." Her favorite book is "Esperanza Rising" by Pam Munoz Ryan. In her free time, Alma likes to watch movies, cook, exercise, and sleep.



    Silvia Guerrero is the business manager for Sylvan RGV. Sylvan students call her "Ms. Silvia." Silvia graduated from DePaul Univ. with a BA in business and from the Univ. of Phoenix with an MBA. Before joining the Sylvan team in 2011, Silvia worked at Cornerstone Regional Hospital. Silvia's favorite movie is "White House Down," and her favorite books are from "The Vampire Chronicles" series by Anne Rice. Silvia's favorite quotation is a famous one from William Shakespeare: "To be or not to be, that is the question." In her free time, Silvia likes to go to the movies and hang out with friends. Silvia is happy to be part of the Sylvan team. "I like working in this friendly environment!"
