    Center Director

    Possessed with a desire to never experience boredom, Center Director, Dana Robbins Childs has been teaching English, reading, history, communication, business and economics, art, art history and math for over 30 years. When she's not at the center she loves to paint, hike and play with her grandkids.

    Layne Maddox


    Layne Maddox specializes in Geometry, higher level math and SAT/ACT Prep as a tutor at Sylvan in Johnson City. When she is not helping students get to that next level of learning, she travels the world, loves reading fantasy, archery and playing with her animals and video games.

    Danielle Miller


    A super dynamo in advanced math, SAT, ACT and reading teacher, Danielle Miller teaches special ed at Unicoi High by day and boosts up the academic engines of students at Sylvan in the afternoons and evenings. When she takes off her cape she enjoys watching her daughter play T-ball, helping former students and hanging out with her husband and the family.

    Brandon Shumate


    Brandon Schmate specializes in teaching reading and math to the intermediate level. When not tutoring at Sylvan you can find Brandon spending time with his family, reading and studying history. Yes, folks, he does this in his spare's the Sylvan Way! Having taught special needs at Unicoi High, he is now teaching closer to home at Hampton Elementary.

    Renee Christian


    With over 30-years in the classroom, Renee Christian enjoys her homestead in the mountains where she gardens, bakes and raises chickens. When she's not at Sylvan, she enjoys taking long hikes with her husband and continues to explore her passion of creative writing in her spare time and while volunteering for the Bonnie Kate Theatre in Elizabethton. She inspires struggling readers and writers to strengthen their skill set while tutoring here, at Sylvan.
