Our tutors and staff in Lafayette consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Lafayette know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.   • Christy Sharon, Executive Director

    Executive Director

    Christy received her B.A. in English in 1992 and taught 5th to 8th grade English at First Baptist Christian School for two and a half years. She also taught 9th and 10th grade reading and 11th and 12th grade study skills at St. Thomas More. In October of 1996, Christy joined Sylvan as a Director of Education and in October of 1997, she bought Sylvan and became Executive Director. Christy enjoys spending time with her 2 beautiful children.

  • Troy Sharon, Center Director

    Center Director

    After graduating from UL in 1993, Troy began teaching and coaching at St. Martinville Sr. High. For several years, Troy worked at Sylvan after school and during the summer break from school. In 2004, he joined the Sylvan staff full time, assuming the role of Center Director. Troy enjoys introducing new families to Sylvan and keeping them informed of their student's progress throughout their program. On Saturday afternoons, you will find Troy and his family enjoying UL Ragin Cajun tailgating.

  • Yvette Brown, Assistant Center Director

    Yvette Brown

    Assistant Center Director

    Graduating from LSU of Baton Rouge with a Bachelor’s in Psychology and her teaching certificate, Yvette continued to get her Master’s degree in Educational Administration. She has experience teaching in both public and private schools, as well as working with non-profit organizations. She now serves as a part-time Center Director in our Lafayette office. Yvette says her favorite thing about Sylvan is, “ I love meeting the needs of students who are struggling. It’s extremely rewarding to watch children learn and grow.” In her free time she enjoys playing tennis, kayaking and loves to READ!
  • Cynthia Bishop, Assistant Center Director

    Assistant Center Director

    Cynthia received her B.S. in Home Economics and taught for one year at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (currently University of Louisiana) in the Department of Human Resources. She did substitute teaching in both local public and private schools and at Lafayette Regional Institute. She began her Sylvan career in 1992. Cynthia enjoys working directly with the schools to help ensure the success of all her Sylvan students.

    Lead Teacher/Tutor

    Peggy Jones is originally from Opelousas, LA and a proud 1990 graduate of Opelousas High School. She received her B.A. Degree in elementary education in 1994 from Southern University. She has taught 4th grade for 22.5 years at the following schools: Truman Elementary, Carencro Heights, and S.J. Montgomery. She is currently employed as a Math Instructional Leader for the school district. In her spare time, Peggy enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. She enjoys teaching at Sylvan Learning Center because she helps students overcome academic barriers and gain self-worth which helps them to be successful in school and life.

    Michaela received her B.A. in Mathematics and Physics from Berea College in Kentucky and a M.S. in Geology and Geophysics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.Michaela held a math/science lecturer position at Kapi'olani Community College (KCC) in Hawaii. While at KCC Michaela taught classes such as Elemental Algebra, Fundamental Algebra, and Statistics. Prior to teaching at KCC, Micahela gained much experience tutoring both privately and professionally, as well as briefly teaching with the Upward Bound Program. She has been a Sylvan tutor at the Lafayette location since 2013 and loves working with students who are so eager to learn, especially in math and science!

    Lead Robotics Instructor

    Jenna Landry received her B.A in Child and Family Studies from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and will soon be starting her M.S. in Counseling Education. She started at Sylvan Learning Center in Lafayette, LA in October 2011. She is our Lead Robotics Instructor, she loves teaching students to build and program their robots using LEGOS. Her favorite part of Sylvan is watching the students engage in learning and seeing the light bulb go off! She loves reading and quality time with her friends!
  • Destini Ransonet , Classroom Assistant

    Classroom Assistant

    Destini has been working at our Lafayette Center for a little over a year now and she recently started working in New Iberia also. She is currently at UL studying Exercise Science with a concentration in Pre-Professional studies. She plans to one day work as an EMT. She says her favorite thing about working at Sylvan is, “Getting to know both the teachers and the kids. It makes me very happy to be able to inspire and encourage kids to feel confident in their studies as well as feeling comfortable at Sylvan!” In her free time, you can find Destini spending time with family and friends or studying.

    Victoria "Ashley" Nelson

    Support Staff

    Ashley has been a part of the Sylvan Support Staff since October of 2012. She is currently attending SLCC and plans to transfer to ULL in the Fall of 2017, to major in Chemical Engineering. You can find Ashley assisting Sylvan Students at all 3 locations in Acadiana! She loves to read and travel. She makes a fantastic connection to students of all ages and loves to help them achieve success!
