Our tutors and staff in Lynchburg consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Lynchburg know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores. We selectively choose tutors who know local curriculum and can link Sylvan lessons to what’s being taught in school. Get to know our tutors and staff in Lynchburg!

  • Ginny Shank, Executive Director

    Executive Director

    As executive director and Lynchburg Center Director, Ginny oversees seven teaching locations in the Lynchburg and Danville territories as well as our Prometric Testing center. A Lynchburg native, she has earned degrees from Bryan College (B.S.) and Lynchburg College (M.Ed.) and has taught in in both public and private schools. Ginny has more than 14 years of experience with Sylvan. Ginny is the proud mother of one daughter, Caroline, and she enjoys reading and writing in her spare time.

  • Tom Jennings, Franchisee

    Tom Jennings

    Franchisee

    Tom is the Franchisee operating this Sylvan Learning Center. Tom's background includes a Bachelor of Science in Commerce from the University of Virginia in 1987 and 25 years of sales and sales management experience. He has owned this center for two decades and also has a center in Danville. Tom is married and has 4 children, all in college.

  • Bob Morgan, Regional Marketing Director

    Regional Marketing Director

    As regional marketing director of our centers, Bob leads community outreach and marketing of Sylvan through the Central and Southside Virginia areas.  A graduate of James Madison University, he taught for nearly 10 years at the college level and has more than 30 years of media, marketing and teaching experience. A Center Director for more than 11 years Bob made education a full-time career to make a difference in children’s lives. He and his wife, Kathi, have two grown daughters (both educators) and five grandchildren. He is an avid Yankees fan.

  • Clay Ashby, Director of Education

    Director of Education

    Clay administers our educational programs and manages and trains our team of tutors in Lynchburg and our centers in Appomattox, Farmville, Madison Heights and Boonsboro.  A graduate of Lynchburg College and a former elementary school teacher in Amherst County,  Clay has more than nine years Sylvan experience. When away from Sylvan, Clay is an avid sports fan (Redskins, Cubs and Bulls) and outdoors enthusiast.

  • Angela Blankenship, Director of Education

    Angela Blankenship

    Director of Education

    Angela oversees the educational integrity of our programs, managing and training our team of tutors in Lynchburg and our centers in Appomattox, Farmville, Madison Heights and Boonsboro. A former middle school teacher in Virginia and Hawaii, Angela brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Sylvan. She has worked with Sylvan for more than 10 years. Angela graduated from Liberty University and has completed graduate work at the University of Virginia and Longwood University. When Angela isn’t at Sylvan, she is a homeschooling mother and spouse.

  • Dr. Laura Jones, Tutor

    Dr. Laura Jones

    Tutor

    Laura has been a Sylvan instructor in Lynchburg for seven years and completed her doctorate degree in Teaching and Instruction at Liberty University in 2016. Laura is a gifted teacher and mentor. When not at Sylvan Laura is a passionate hiker and you can usually find her on the trails over the weekend. She and her husband recently completed a year in Romania as part of a Fulbright program.

  • Mary Soles, Tutor

    Mary Soles

    Tutor

    Mary is an instructor in Lynchburg and Boonsboro. She has more than 30 years teaching experience as a middle and high school English teacher and, more recently, as a librarian at Central Virginia Community College. She earned B.A. and M.Ed. degrees from Longwood University. Mary has 10 years Sylvan experience and teaches reading, study skills, writing, and SAT/ACT Prep. Away from Sylvan she enjoys spending time with her two girls and enjoys reading and beach-going.

  • Chris Salerno, Tutor

    Chris Salerno

    Tutor

    Chris is an instructor in Lynchburg, Appomattox and Farmville. While Chris has many tutoring talents, he is a gifted musician. He studied at Vandercook College of Music  in Chicago and at Radford University where he received his M.Ed. Chris is also a faculty member of Appomattox Christian School. 

  • Bobby Markey, Tutor

    Bobby is a math specialist and SAT specialist for the Lynchburg center and  works with students through the college level. While he has many tutoring talents, he finds the greatest joy in advanced math tutoring. He studied at Longwood University. He is an AP-level instructor for Campbell County Schools and a Denver Broncos fan.

    Tutor

    Cathy is an instructor in Appomattox. She finds the greatest joy in helping children who are struggling in reading. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Liberty University. She has been teaching for 15 years. She currently is a teacher at Appomattox Christian Academy and taught previously in Lynchburg and in Delaware. 
  • Vangie Poggemiller, Tutor

    Tutor

    Vangie Poggemiller is an instructor at our Lynchburg, Appomattox and Madison Heights Centers. She is a versatile teacher who works well with students of all levels. Vangie earned a BS degree in Education from Liberty University. Vangie has traveled extensively and her favorite book is “Ann of Green Gables.”.
  • Kathy Nichols, Tutor

    Kathy is a tutor at our Lynchburg, Appomattox and Madison Heights Centers.  Kathy finds great joy in working with special needs students. She studied at Lynchburg College, earning two M.Ed. degrees in special education. When Kathy isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her reading, walking, decorating, and rooting for Virginia Tech.
  • Lynne Kratochvil, Tutor

    Lynne Kratochvil

    Tutor

    Lynne is a tutor at our Lynchburg and Madison Heights Centers. A former principal, she enjoys being back in a teaching role. She is a versatile instructor adept at many subjects at multiple grade levels. She has a BA in Education and M.Ed. in Administration. She enjoys reading, golf and following the SF 49ers.
  • Danielle Wikander, Tutor

    Danielle is an instructor in Lynchburg with a gift for working with kids. While Danielle has many tutoring talents, she finds the greatest joy in teaching reading skills. She studied at Liberty University and recently earned her M.Ed. and reading specialist certification. When Danielle isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her spending time with her family, doing outdoor activities, and of course reading.

  • Dan Smith, Tutor

    Tutor

    Dan Smith is an instructor at our Lynchburg and Madison Heights Centers. He is a veteran teacher at the high school level (Science) and enjoys working with kids. Dan earned a BS degree in biology from the University of Virginia. When Dan isn’t at Sylvan he enjoys time with his family, movies, travel and video games.
  • Katlyen Ross, Tutor

    Katlyen Ross

    Tutor

    Katelyn is an instructor in Lynchburg ae well as several of our satellite teaching locations. Katelyn is an enthusiastic teacher who works well with students of all grade-levels. She earned degrees in early childhood education and elementary education at Clarks Summitt (PA.) University. When Katelyn isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her spending time with her husband and dog Maggie doing outdoor activities. A musician, she also collects music boxes.
  • Gilda Reichert, Tutor

    Gilda Reichert

    Tutor

    Gilda is an instructor in Lynchburg with a gift for working with young students. She studied at both Lynchburg College and the University of Virginia and has an M.Ed. in educational leadership and also as a reading specialist. She enjoys her time with her husband and two daughters, is an avid reader and a fan of the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers.
  • Dani Derringer Zhang, Tutor

    Dani Derringer Zhang

    Tutor

    Dani is an instructor at our Lynchburg Center. She is a veteran teacher at the high school level (math) and enjoys working with students of all ages. Dani earned a BA in mathematics from William & Mary and a MAT in Mathematics from Hollins.  Dani is also a curriculum designer for the Mountain Shepherd Wilderness School. She has traveled internationally and is an avid hiker and reader.

    Barbara is an instructor at our Lynchburg Center. She is a versatile teacher who works well with students of all levels. Barbara earned a BA degree in Education from Liberty University and is currently in an M.Ed. program for reading specialists. Barbara has traveled extensively and is a fan of all Boston professional teams.
  • Betsy Burnett, Tutor

    Betsy Burnett

    Tutor

    Betsy is a tutor at our Lynchburg and Madison Heights Centers. Betsy started at Sylvan three years ago as a teaching assistant and assessor. Upon earning her degree at Lynchburg College, she became an instructor. Both of her parents are educators. She enjoys painting and is very active in her church’s youth ministry.
