Sylvan Helps Prepare Your Teen for Success on College Entrance Exams

Jan 25, 2017
It can seem a bit premature at times for our children to start focusing on college exams, especially at a very early age, but the reality is the more prepared they are, the better an outcome they can expect. Being prepared for college entrance exams can help students relieve much of the stress that comes along with high school and college preparation.
As there are so many elements involved in planning for college, it can be quite overwhelming and cause our children to take a few missteps. Without an adequate score on their SAT and ACT, it can be difficult for them to attend the college of their choice.
High school can only prepare our children so much, it is up to them to become familiar with what the exams will test them on, and to use available resources to effectively prepare. Hector Irlas, Coordinator of Testing Services at South Texas College, has gone on record stating, “Exams such as the ACT or SAT can be very different than typical high school exams, and practicing will make the student more comfortable with the different formats, the different types of question structures, and can help them gain proper mindset.”
Your Sylvan Learning of the Rio Grande Valley can help your student effectively prepare for these very important exams. Our proven combination of small-group instruction, independent learning, and practice tests, ensures that you child will learn valuable strategies for tackling varying types of exam questions and help to improve specific skill areas.
Some benefits of preparing for the SAT and ACT tests with Sylvan include:
  • Filling in the gaps. Familiarity with subject areas that students are uncomfortable with can help them perform more accurately.
  • Strategy. It is important to be aware of how questions can be presented and how each test is scored. Also, knowing how to guess, track time, and how to effectively use the process of elimination can greatly increase chances of receiving higher scores.
  • Familiarity. Becoming familiar with how long the tests are can be extremely beneficial. Along with this, students will also gain knowledge on which calculators are allowed on testing day. Understanding this information will help to put a student at ease, which can help to provide a better experience.
  • Confidence. Knowing what will be on the exam can reduce test anxiety and help them think more clearly on test day.
Most students begin taking college entrance exams during their junior year of high school. As we all know, time flies faster than a speeding bullet, and this can lead students and parents to a state of disarray. Make sure your child begins to study for upcoming exams at least 6-8 weeks ahead of time.
It is highly recommended that students do not involve themselves in cram sessions for preparing for college entrance exams. Students might be able to pull that off with midterms and receive passing scores, but with SAT/ACT, it is highly unlikely that high scores will be achieved.
Also, remember that staying healthy and getting plenty of rest before test day is very important. Food is fuel for not only for our bodies but our brains as well. An online article by Be Brain Fit suggests eating foods high in antioxidants, proteins that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids, healthy carbohydrates, and good fats. Consuming these foods in a regular diet can help energy levels and concentration as well.
