Our tutors and staff in Midland consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Midland know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.   • Cathy Ringey, Center Director

    Center Director

    As Center Director, Cathy leads the daily operations for Sylvan of Midland. Formerly, she was the Director of Education for 8 years. Working in small groups in her children's classrooms sparked her interest in becoming a teacher and working in the tutoring business. She earned her Elementary Education degree at Saginaw Valley State University. When Cathy isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her spending time with her children, family, friends, and dog as well as dancing, traveling, attending live entertainment, or enjoying one of many outdoor activities.

    Allison Bork

    Tutor

    Allison is a graduate of Grand Valley State University, where she studied secondary English Education. At Sylvan, she shares her teaching talents with students in Reading, Writing, English SAT/ACT, Study Skills, and math. When not at Sylvan, Allison enjoys writing and curling up to read a novel with her cat, Arvid.
  • Jim Yanacek, Tutor

    Jim Yanacek

    Tutor

    Jim is an instructor in Midland, Michigan. His areas of specialty include math, chemistry, physics, and ACT/SAT Prep. He studied at Clemson University. As a retired chemical engineer, Jim brings a wealth of experience to share with his students. He enjoys running and is currently a high school track coach. Boating is another of his passions.

    Dr. David Busby

    Tutor

    Dave works as a chemist in Midland. He earned his degree at the University of Nebraska. As a Sylvan of Midland tutor, he especially enjoys teaching all levels of math, as well as ACT/SAT Prep and some sciences. Dave derives the most satisfaction from the moments his students "get it." Traveling and playing tennis and golf are Dave's favorite ways of spending his spare time.

    Rachael Hobbs

    Rachael grew up in Texas and graduated from the University of Texas with a B.S. in Mathematics. While in Texas, she taught high school Geometry and Algebra II. Rachael moved to Michigan in 2019 to be closer to her two nephews. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her dog and playing video games. 
  • Maggie Thompson, Director of Education/Tutor

    Maggie Thompson

    Director of Education/Tutor

    Maggie earned her Associate's Degree in Elementary Education. She ran a successful in-home daycare for 18 years. Both of Maggie's parents were teachers, so she feels that teaching is literally in her blood. She experiences much satisfaction when working with students. In her spare time, Maggie enjoys crafting. She also cherishes her cat, Molly.
  • Mark Paredes, Tutor

    Mark Paredes

    Tutor

    Mark graduated from BYU with a major in Italian and minor in Russian. After serving as a U.S. diplomat in Mexico and Israel, he worked in the Los Angeles nonprofit world before becoming a high school teacher. He currently teaches foreign languages and Social Studies. At Sylvan Mark helps students with SAT prep (English and Math), Academic Reading (K-12), Math (K-8), and foreign languages. In his spare time he likes to travel with his family, read, collect foreign-language copies of Don Quixote, and coach soccer, Model UN, and Robotics teams.
