Our tutors and staff in Mt. Pleasant consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Mount Pleasant know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.     Patti McGrath

    Owner / Center Director

    Patti received her BS in Elementary Education and Masters in Reading and Language Arts from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh PA. She was a public and private school teacher for 15 years. Patti has been tutoring at Sylvan since 2010. She loves teaching the students at Sylvan because everyday is a new chance to help each child learn unique ways to achieve personal success. On Dec. 1st of 2017 Patti and her husband Ray became owners of the Mt Pleasant Sylvan Learning Center.

    Heather Blackmon


    Heather moved from New York to Charleston seven years ago after graduating from Canisius College. As an elementary educator for the  past six years she has empowered students to reach their fullest potential. Heather believes that in order to do so, effective instruction requires differentiation, which is the driving reason why she loves working for Sylvan. It is her solemn belief all students can master the material when it is presented in a way that best addresses each student’s individual learning style.

    Jeanne Plastow


    Jeanne received a bachelor's degree in Sociology from Russell Sage College in Troy, NY, and a master’s in Special Education from Southeast Missouri State. She has been with Sylvan of Mt. Pleasant since January 2013. Jeanne enjoys tutoring students in reading and math. 

  • Hermine Nelson, Teacher

    Hermine Nelson


    Hermine is a native Charlestonian and a graduate of Burke High School. She attended Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia and The Citadel, here in Charleston and has a BS degree in History, Education and Master of Education in Learning Disabilities. Hermine retired from teaching special education after 35 years, but has also taught various levels of math, reading, science and social studies during her teaching career, as well as adult GED classes at Fayetteville Technical Community College in North Carolina. Hermine has been a Sylvan teacher for almost 20 years and really enjoys being able to teach the individual learning plans designed for each student.  
  • Lindsey Manos , Teacher

    Lindsey Manos


    Lindsey works at River Oaks Middle School teaching both 8th grade math and Algebra 1. It is her second year teaching and she has always wanted to work with children. She loves getting to know children's different personalities while helping to shape them to be a positive member of society. She spent a year and a half at Sylvan Learning Center in high school for SAT help and she could not have been more pleased with it!! She is so excited to be working at Sylvan to get more one on one interaction with students.

    Kate Kerber


    Kate has lived in Charleston for the past 4 years.  She grew up in Minnesota, attended University of Minnesota, Morris for undergrad and College of Charleston for her masters.  She has taught 5th grade in North Charleston for the past 4 years. She excited to help your child grow and learn!

    Carolyn Santos


     Carolyn works at both Drayton Hall and Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary schools as a Reading Interventionist for Charleston County. She has worked with children for 11 years now and loves their open and honest personalities! They tell it like it is! She enjoys working at Sylvan over the summer to keep her mind fresh and keep herself busy.     
  • David Rainford , teacher

    David Rainford


    Dave earned a B.S. in Education from Indiana University with a major in Comprehensive Social Studies and a minor in Biology.  He has a Masters for Secondary Administration from Ohio University.He retired from teaching with nearly three decades in the classroom with two Teacher of the Year awards. He also served as an athletic administrator. He is most proud of success in helping students improve upon their ACT scores before and after his retirement.  Since 2003, Dave has given historic tours at Middleton Place.Now he truly enjoys the one on one experience with Sylvan students. 
  • Caitlin Gibbs , Director

    Caitlin Gibbs


    Caitlin received her Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education from The University of Phoenix.  She taught four years of 4th grade Math and Science and one year of 5th grade ELA and Social Studies.  Caitlin joined Sylvan in June 2018 full time as a director under her parents Ray and Patti McGrath, owners/ directors of the Sylvan Mt. Pleasant. Caitlin was excited to join Sylvan of Mt. Pleasant in order to help students become confident and successful in school. Being able to work in small groups with students allows teachers at Sylvan to get to know the students as individuals and Caitlin sees students growth and confidence build each time they come for a session.

    Kristen Mantore


    Kristen earned her undergraduate in Elementary Education from Winthrop University and her graduate degree in Literacy from CSU.  She taught 3 years in 4th/ 5th grade teaching all subjects and is currently a curriculum coach.  Besides working at Sylvan, Kristen is also an independent beauty consultant and loves experimenting with new make up looks.  Kristen likes working at Sylvan because she enjoys being able to work with small groups of children so that she can get to know the students as individuals and discover how they uniquely learn.
  • Katherine Smith , English/ SAT/ ACT Teacher

    Katherine Smith

    English/ SAT/ ACT Teacher

    Katherine attended college at Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  She has her masters degree + 30.  She taught high school English/ writing for 36 years and SAT/ ACT.  Presently she is teaching English/ writing at CSU. Katherine enjoys parasailing and snorkeling in the Caribbean.  Katherine likes working at Sylvan because of the people she works with, the stress free environment, and everyone is doing their best to help all students.  Sylvan is a busy hive of creative activity and hands down she loves the students!!

    Cheryl Durden


    Cheryl has her bachelors degree in Sociology from USC- Aiken and a Masters of Science in Athletic Administration from Ohio University.  Cheryl has been teaching in Special Education for seven years and has also been a coach for seven years.  In her spare time, Cheryl likes to exercise and stay healthy.  At Sylvan, Cheryl enjoys working with students one on one as well as in small groups.  She loves seeing the light bulb go on when they finally understand. 
  • Stacey Gault, Teacher

    Stacey Gault


    Stacey earned a chemical engineering degree from USC- Columbia and an MBA from North Central University outside of Chicago.  She has been teaching middle/ high school sciences for two years in the subjects of chemistry, biology, physiology, marine biology and all middle school. In her free time, Stacey loves to read and visit new places.  Stacey says she loves working with the kids at Sylvan and watching the light bulb go on. 
  • Laury Wehunt , Teacher

    Laury Wehunt


    Laury has a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from the College of Charleston as well as a M.A.T in Secondary Math/ Education from the Citadel and is Nationally board certified in Adolescence Math. Laury is a retired teacher now.  She taught one year at Cainhoy High School and taught Algebra I and II, Geometry and Enrichment Math.  The remaining 27 years Laury taught at Camden Middle School teaching Math, Geometry, Pre- Algebra and Algebra.  In her spare time, Laury loves reading, playing tennis, and spending time with her dogs on the beach.  Laury enjoys working at Sylvan because she can work one on one with the students and see when they really understand the concepts.
