Our tutors and staff in Mt. Pleasant consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Mount Pleasant know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.     Owner / Center Director

    Patti received her BS in Elementary Education and Masters in Reading and Language Arts from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh PA. She was a public and private school teacher for 15 years. Patti has been tutoring at Sylvan since 2010. She loves teaching the students at Sylvan because everyday is a new chance to help each child learn unique ways to achieve personal success. On Dec. 1st of 2017 Patti and her husband Ray became owners of the Mt Pleasant Sylvan Learning Center.

    Teacher

    Meredith has been with Sylvan for more than 8 years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from East Carolina University, and is currently working on her master’s degree in Literacy at the Citadel. Meredith has been teaching Kindergarten for the last 7 years and says, “I could not imagine doing anything else!

    Heather moved from New York to Charleston seven years ago after graduating from Canisius College. As an elementary educator for the  past six years she has empowered students to reach their fullest potential. Heather believes that in order to do so, effective instruction requires differentiation, which is the driving reason why she loves working for Sylvan. It is her solemn belief all students can master the material when it is presented in a way that best addresses each student’s individual learning style.

    Jeanne received a bachelor's degree in Sociology from Russell Sage College in Troy, NY, and a master’s in Special Education from Southeast Missouri State. She has been with Sylvan of Mt. Pleasant since January 2013. Jeanne enjoys tutoring students in reading and math.

    Hermine Nelson

    Teacher

    Hermine is a native Charlestonian and a graduate of Burke High School. She attended Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia and The Citadel, here in Charleston and has a BS degree in History, Education and Master of Education in Learning Disabilities. Hermine retired from teaching special education after 35 years, but has also taught various levels of math, reading, science and social studies during her teaching career, as well as adult GED classes at Fayetteville Technical Community College in North Carolina. Hermine has been a Sylvan teacher for almost 20 years and really enjoys being able to teach the individual learning plans designed for each student.

    Madison is new to Sylvan, but is not new to teaching! She has a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Mathematics Education from Southern Wesleyan University, and a Master of Arts in Literacy from Liberty University. She has five full years of teaching experience in the public education system, and over two years of experience tutoring one-on-one. Madison is no longer in the classroom as she works as a worship leader in a nearby church. She loves teaching at Sylvan because it gives her the opportunity to continue investing in the lives of the rising generation.

    Lindsey works at River Oaks Middle School teaching both 8th grade math and Algebra 1. It is her second year teaching and she has always wanted to work with children. She loves getting to know children's different personalities while helping to shape them to be a positive member of society. She spent a year and a half at Sylvan Learning Center in high school for SAT help and she could not have been more pleased with it!! She is so excited to be working at Sylvan to get more one on one interaction with students.

    Kate has lived in Charleston for the past 4 years.  She grew up in Minnesota, attended University of Minnesota, Morris for undergrad and College of Charleston for her masters.  She has taught 5th grade in North Charleston for the past 4 years. She excited to help your child grow and learn!

    Reagan has a BS in Elementary Education and a Masters in Reading Education. She has been a teacher for 7 years and has taught 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade. In her spare time, she likes to read, go to the beach, and spend time with friends and family.  She works at Sylvan because she enjoys the one-on-one time that she gets with their learning!

     Carolyn works at both Drayton Hall and Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary schools as a Reading Interventionist for Charleston County. She has worked with children for 11 years now and loves their open and honest personalities! They tell it like it is! She enjoys working at Sylvan over the summer to keep her mind fresh and keep herself busy.
