Our tutors and staff in Mt. Pleasant consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Mount Pleasant know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.   • Doni Harrison, Center Director - Mt. Pleasant

    Doni Harrison

    Center Director - Mt. Pleasant

    Doni leads center operations, sales, marketing and staff management for Sylvan of Mt. Pleasant. A graduate of the College of Charleston, she began her career in education teaching algebra and insists that all students are capable of achieving far more than they imagine. When not at Sylvan, Doni enjoys spending time with family, hiking, biking, and exploring all corners of the planet. 
  • Patti McGrath, Director of Education

    Patti McGrath

    Director of Education

    Patti received her BS in Elementary Education and Masters in Reading and Language Arts from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh PA. She was a public and private school teacher for 15 years. Patti has been tutoring at Sylvan since 2010. She loves teaching the students at Sylvan because everyday is a new chance to help each child learn unique ways to achieve personal success.

    Meredith Allyn

    Teacher

    Meredith has been with Sylvan for more than 8 years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from East Carolina University, and is currently working on her master’s degree in Literacy at the Citadel. Meredith has been teaching Kindergarten for the last 7 years and says, “I could not imagine doing anything else! 
  • Heather Blackmon, Teacher

    Heather Blackmon

    Teacher

    Heather moved from New York to Charleston seven years ago after graduating from Canisius College. As an elementary educator for the  past six years she has empowered students to reach their fullest potential. Heather believes that in order to do so, effective instruction requires differentiation, which is the driving reason why she loves working for Sylvan. It is her solemn belief all students can master the material when it is presented in a way that best addresses each student’s individual learning style. 
  • Jeanne Plastow, Teacher

    Jeanne Plastow

    Teacher

    Jeanne received a bachelor's degree in Sociology from Russell Sage College in Troy, NY, and a master’s in Special Education from Southeast Missouri State. She has been with Sylvan of Mt. Pleasant since January 2013. Jeanne enjoys tutoring students in reading and math. 

  • Alex Liney, Teacher

    Alex Liney

    Teacher

    A southeast Pennsylvania native, Alex moved to Charleston in 2016 after receiving his bachelor's in English from Penn State. He's worked with and mentored students of all ages across a variety of subjects, and he believes that making learning fun and engaging is the key to academic success. Alex has worked as a freelance copy editor and proofreader for the past two years and enjoys sharing his passion for writing with others. At Sylvan, he's had the privilege of working with students on math, reading, writing, algebra, and chemistry.
  • Hermine Nelson, Teacher

    Hermine Nelson

    Teacher

    Hermine is a native Charlestonian and a graduate of Burke High School. She attended Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia and The Citadel, here in Charleston and has a BS degree in History, Education and Master of Education in Learning Disabilities. Hermine retired from teaching special education after 35 years, but has also taught various levels of math, reading, science and social studies during her teaching career, as well as adult GED classes at Fayetteville Technical Community College in North Carolina. Hermine has been a Sylvan teacher for almost 20 years and really enjoys being able to teach the individual learning plans designed for each student.
