Our tutors and staff in Northridge consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Northridge know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.     Center Director

    Cathy is an award winning manager who has experience in Education, Retail Management, Sales and Fitness. As a former elementary school teacher and Art Docent Coordinator, she brings her love of learning to all families who support their children's educational goals, and is often the first person new families contact when they join Sylvan. Cathy and her team have created a nurturing environment that challenges students to fulfill their academic potential with THE approach that learning is fun and every student is unique. While at the University of San Diego, she received her Bachelor of Arts and taught for the San Diego Unified School district. When she is not at Sylvan, you will find her spending quality time with her family or pursuing her other passions in fitness and art.

    Director of Education

    Michelle is a passionate tutor who especially loves teaching reading because reading can take a person anywhere. She loves helping students see that learning is a lifelong joy and hopes they will always strive to keep wanting more knowledge. Michelle is a graduate of Cal State Northridge. When she's not at Sylvan she enjoys going to the movies, reading, baking, going to Disneyland, and spending time with her husband and family.

    Joe F.


    Joe enjoys teaching all levels of math, but especially Algebra and SAT/ACT prep. He truly became excited about math when he was exposed to pre-algebra in the 7th grade. He loved trying to figure out complex number puzzles and appreciated the fact that math always has just one right answer. Joe graduated from Duke University with a BA in Economics and a minor in Chemistry and The Yale School of Management with an MBA in Marketing and Leadership. In his free time, Joe enjoys cooking and discovering new recipes and styles of cooking. He is also writing a biography about Coach Willie Jeffries, the first African American head football coach in NCAA Division I-A.

    Sarah H.


    Sarah is an experienced tutor who especially enjoys teaching writing and math. Writing is her favorite subject to teach because not only is it an important skill, it is a great creative outlet. She also enjoys teaching math because it was her most difficult subject in school, and she loves showing her students that they can master tough things too. Michelle attended Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington and earned degrees in Secondary Education and History. She loves to write and does it all the time. Novels, screenplays, essays, articles, blogs, journals...if it can be written, she's done it. She also loves reading, learning new languages, and making/listening to music.

    Launa B


    Launa holds a BA in English, Multi-Subject Teacher Credential, and Special Education Credential. She is a mother of two boys, two girls, and has one grandson. She has been teaching since 1997. She is a dedicated volunteer working with LAUSD, PTSA, YMCA, AYSO, drug-free programs, and suicide prevention. She has received common core training and works in an advocacy program for African-American students. Launa is the founder of three non-profits: Cans For Campus, SALVAGE & Colors Of Hue. Her hobbies include water and beach sports, religious activities, scrapbooking, and any activity involving her children and family.
