Our tutors and staff in Renton consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Renton know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores. We selectively choose tutors who know local curriculum and can link Sylvan lessons to what’s being taught in school. Get to know our tutors and staff in Renton!

    Hayley Kay

    Center Director

    Hayley was born and raised in Issaquah. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education with an ELL endorsement from Central Washington University. Hayley first decided to become a teacher during her senior year of high school. She had great teachers throughout her schooling and wanted to follow their example. She first joined Sylvan as a Reading tutor, and enjoys seeing students at Sylvan of Renton grasp new concepts and gain a sense of accomplishment. In her free time Hayley can be found hiking, reading, spending time with family and friends, and adding to her collection of key chains from around the world.

    Jodi Ackerman

    Teacher

    Jodi was born in Renton, and has lived all her life in this area. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at UW and her Masters in Education from WGU Teachers College. Jodi first became interested in teaching while attending UW and tutoring elementary and middle school students in Seattle and Edmonds. She loves the "light bulb" moment when a student finally grasps a difficult concept. She believes in keeping a growth mindset as a teacher, as we all learn at our own pace. Jodi joined the Renton team as a Math tutor. When she's not teaching, she can be found reading, hiking, gardening, and spending time with her friends, husband, and two children.

    Teacher

    Erin was born in Ohio, and moved to the Puget Sound area in 1996. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in math, secondary education, from Western Washington University; she is currently pursuing her Master of Arts degree in Special Education. Erin first got into teaching because she likes working with children, Her favorite part of teaching is when students have the 'aha!' moment as a concept finally clicks with them. Erin joined the Renton Sylvan as a math tutor. When not teaching, she can be found reading, painting rocks, watching Seahawks games, volunteering, and traveling.

    Amy Campbell

    Teacher

    Amy was born and raised in the Puget Sound area. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, and her Masters degree in Education from UW Bothell. Amy became a teacher because she loves knowledge and learning and wants to pass that love on to others. She enjoys seeing students' eyes light up when they start to understand something where they had once struggled. She joined the Renton Sylvan as a math tutor. When not at Sylvan, she enjoys reading, thrift-shopping, visiting family and friends, and practicing American Sign Language.

    Edara Daum

    Teacher

    Edara has worked as a tutor and teacher’s assistant for students in grades kindergarten through college. She received her BA in Women’s History and Theatre at The Evergreen State College (with a study abroad at University of Oxford) and graduated with honors at University of Glasgow with a MSc in Gender History. Edara hopes to one day be a history and gender theory professor and work in education reformation. She joined the Renton Sylvan as a reading tutor. In her free time, if she’s not hanging out with her baby nephew in her parents' recording studio, she’s reading, writing, researching or creating.

    Teacher

    Leo was born and raised in the Puget Sound area. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry and his Masters Degree in Teaching from Washington State University in Pullman. Leo was inspired to become a teacher by his high school teachers, especially his chemistry instructor. He enjoys helping students to learn and achieve the 'light bulb' moment. Leo joined the Renton Sylvan as a Math tutor. In his free time he enjoys playing video games, playing board games, and reading.

    Emily Young

    Teacher

    Emily was born in Seattle, and has lived in the area her whole life. She graduated from UW with a degree in medical anthropology, and has also completed certification as a veterinary assistant. She is currently working towards her Master's Degree. Emily first became interested in teaching during her senior year of high school when she did her senior project in a first grade classroom. She strives to make learning fun, motivating, and impactful for all her students. Emily joined the Renton Sylvan as a School Support coach. In her free time, she enjoys photography, cooking, the outdoors, and quality time with her four pets.
