Our tutors and staff in Saint Paul consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed.     Center Director

    As Center Director, Sarah facilitates creating a learning environment that is beneficial to students and families for Sylvan of St. Paul. With years of experience in the education field, Sarah chose a career with Sylvan to create a learning environment that ensures success for all students. Every student learns at a different rate and style; Sarah believes that all students can learn when given access to the amazing tools Sylvan has developed. With a Master's in Secondary Science Education and Educational Technology, Sarah offers her skill set to Sylvan and additionally teaches a teachers lab techniques course at the University of California at Berkeley. When Sarah isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her spending time with my family, serving others in the community and traveling! 
  • Ed Gorgen, Lead Teacher

    Ed Gorgen

    Lead Teacher

    Ed supports teachers and students so that everyone has what they need to make teaching and learning at Sylvan of Saint Paul a successful experience. A former substitute teacher, Ed brings a wealth of knowledge to his role and joined the Sylvan family in 2009. Ed enjoys working with students of all different age groups and abilities. He graduated from San Jose State University with a BA in Liberal Studies and a minor in Sociology. When Ed isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find him hiking, playing billiards and watching movies.
  • Erika Kim, Teacher

    Erika Kim

    Teacher

    Erika tutors elementary and middle school students in reading, writing, and math at Sylvan. She is passionate about tutoring English, but also has experience in teaching intermediate Mandarin Chinese and Korean to students of diverse ages and backgrounds. Erika earned her B.A. in Literature from the University of Minnesota, and holds a certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language. When Erika isn't at Sylvan, she enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends.  
  • Marissa Flanagan, Teacher

    Marissa Flanagan

    Teacher

    Marissa is a Reading and Math Instructor and has taught at Sylvan for 2 years. She received her degree in elementary education and early childhood education from Concordia University, St. Paul. When Marissa isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her reading, baking, or spending time with family. 
  • Sydney Chandler, Area Education Director

    Sydney Chandler

    Area Education Director

    As Area Education Director, Sydney collaborates with passionate educators and families, shares a love of life-long learning, and enjoys observing students as they grow and develop academically. She graduated from Skidmore College and received a Bachelors in Math and Music. Sydney also has her Masters from Humboldt State University in Mathematical Modeling Environmental Systems. When Sydney isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her running, kayaking, skiing, exploring, learning new things and playing the horn. 
  • Jake Engstrand, Area Director- Operations & Outreach

    Jake Engstrand

    Area Director- Operations & Outreach

    As Area Director of Operations and Outreach, Jake leads overall operations for Sylvan of Coon Rapids. A former Volunteer Coordinator for Osseo Area Schools, Jake brings a wealth of knowledge to the Sylvan center. He studied at Rasmussen College and received a B.S. in Early Childhood Education Leadership. When Jake isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find him reading or spending time hiking with his rescue dog named Finn. 
  • Emmanuel Saye, Area Director

    Emmanuel Saye

    Area Director

    Emmanuel has a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. He finds making a difference in the lives of the youth the most valuable aspect to his role with Sylvan Learning Centers. When he is not working with Sylvan, Emmanuel enjoys spending quality time with his family.
