Our tutors and staff in San Jose - Westgate consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed.     Carrie Campbell

    Center Director

    Carrie Campbell has been with Sylvan for 7 years. She has worked as a Director of Education in both Cupertino and South San Jose, and recently took over as Hamilton’s Center Director. Carrie received her Bachelors Degree in Human Development from U.C. Davis. She went on to receive a multi-subject teaching credential from San Francisco State University.
    Carrie spent over 10 years in the classroom. She worked as a Reading Specialist for Kindergarten through 3rd and also as a 2nd grade teacher. Carrie loves working with children and helping them to reach their fullest potential. In her spare time, Carrie loves to read, run along the Los Gatos Creek Trail, and spend time with her daughter.

    Wendy Aftowicz

    Director of Education

    Wendy Aftowicz received her Bachelor’s degree in Child and Adolescent Development with an emphasis in School-Age Child and Family from San Francisco State University. She earned her multiple subject teaching credential from San Jose State University. She started with Sylvan in 2010 as a teacher, and became a director soon after. She believes in the value of education and loves working with Sylvan students and Families. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, watching football, and spending time with her friends.

    Gary G.

    Director of Education and Tutor

    Gary is a native to San Jose. He attended Santa Clara University and graduated with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a minor in mathematics. Upon graduating he earned a subject area credential in mathematics. Gary taught both junior high and high school classes for over 35 year at St. Leo’s School in San Jose. Gary became a Sylvan instructor in the fall of 2005. He teaches Math Essentials, Advanced Math, Academic Reading, Beginning Reading, and SAT math Prep.
  • Elizabeth B., Tutor

    Elizabeth B.


    Elizabeth attended the University of California at Berkeley and Davis. She graduated with a double major in German and Geography. She has over 15 years’ experience teaching elementary school and adult education as a permanent employee and as a substitute. In addition, she worked in high tech as a technical writer and trainer, and served as an editor for a local publishing house. Elizabeth teaches reading and math.

    Greg has been a tutor at Sylvan of San Jose for seven years. Greg has teaches several subject such as reading, math, and study skills. Greg studied at both the University of California, San Diego and San Diego State University. When Greg is not busy tutoring he enjoys cycling in the local area.

    Shawna F.


    Shawna graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in music and a minor in English. Her teaching career includes seventeen years in the Eastside Union High School District (English, music, and the humanities), as well as three years at middle and elementary schools. She works as a tutor at Sylvan Learning Center since October of 2001.

    Sally G.


    Sally is a tutor in at sylvan of San Jose who possesses a great love for teaching. While Sally has many tutoring talents, she finds the greatest joy in tutoring the subject of reading. Sally graduated from North Kentucky University and attended post graduate school at Xavier University. When Sally is not at Sylvan, you’ll find teaching full time in special education.

    Marilyn G.


    Marilyn has two credentials besides her BA degree from Cal State Northridge. She received a Standard Elementary Credential from San Jose State University and a Mild to Moderate Special Education Credential from Santa Clara University. She teaches the following at Sylvan: Beginning Reading, Academic Reading, Young Writers, and Academic Math.

    Brad K.


    Brad is a well qualified tutor with degrees from Stanford, UCLA, and Harvard. He has over a decade  of experience teaching all ages in both New York and California. Brad teaches both math and reading for Sylvan. When Brad isn’t at Sylvan, he can be found reading, walking his dogs in the park, and spending time with his family.
  • Kevin M., Tutor

    Kevin M.


    Kevin earned a BA in Mathematics with Physics minor at San Jose State University, and a MA in Mathematics from UC Berkeley. He worked as an engineer in Silicon Valley for many years, where he applied his math skills to statistical analysis, communications networks, and software performance. Part of his work was explaining the uses and capabilities of mathematical tools and techniques to users who needed to understand how things worked. He enjoys sharing his enthusiasm for math and statistics, chemistry, and physics with young people now, and has been tutoring in local school classrooms and Sylvan Learning Centers since 2009.

    Janna M.


    Janna earned her Lifetime Secondary Teaching Credential from Sacramento State University. She taught all levels of English and drama. As a drama teacher she directed 2 major plays per year and one musical. As an English teacher, she helped design and implement an English class, which is intended for students who might not go to college. After eight years at Blackford High School, Janna took some time off to raise two children, but she never got too far from teaching. She also taught art, coached soccer, and taught English as a Second Language at DeVargas Elementary. Janna finds that the Sylvan philosophy gives each student room to learn and develop their abilities as an individual.

    Sue M.


    Sue is a tutor for Sylvan in San Jose, California with a gift for working with kids. While Sue has many tutoring talents, she finds the greatest joy in writing tutoring. Sue studied at Ohio University where she received a Bachelors of Sciences in Special Education. She also obtained a Masters of Arts in Teaching. Sue has a multiple subject credential and works for one of the local school districts.

    Annette O.


    Annette is a wonderful Summer time tutor at Sylvan of San Jose. Annette enjoys tutoring reading and writing to a wide range of students. She studied at William Jessup University. During the school year, Annette can be found teaching in the classroom.
  • Torie O., Tutor

    Torie O.


    Currently, Torie is the ELD support teacher at Mount Pleasant School District. She works with students and teachers of students that speak another language at home. She has been teaching for over 25 years at all grade levels from Kindergarten to eighth grade. Torie lived in Mexico when she was young for five years where she learned how to speak Spanish. Torie started teaching in Los Angeles, relocating three years later to San Francisco. In 2004, Torie and her husband came to live in San Jose. At Sylvan, she mainly works with beginning readers; however she enjoys working with the older students as well.

    Joan R.


    Joan is a multitalented tutor at Sylvan of San Jose. While Joan has many tutoring talents, is a favorite amongst beginning reading students. She studied at San Jose State University, which she received a Bachelors of Arts in Education. When Joan is not at Sylvan, you’ll find her baking a plethora of delicious foods.

    Padma is a tutor at Sylvan San Jose with a gift for teaching math. Padma’s math skills transverse all grade levels. She studied at Bangalore University in India as well as Monmouth University in New Jersey. When Padma is not at Sylvan, she enjoys raising her two boys.

    Richard has been a tutor with Sylvan San Jose for over seventeen years. While Richard has many tutoring talents, he finds the greatest joy in the challenge of teaching high school subjects. He studied at Stanford University, the University of Washington, and San Jose State University. When Richard is also greatly enjoys watching films and sports.
