    Center Director

    Cathy is an award winning manager who has experience in Education, Retail Management, Sales and Fitness. As a former elementary school teacher and Art Docent Coordinator, she brings her love of learning to all families who support their children's educational goals, and is often the first person new families contact when they join Sylvan. Cathy and her team have created a nurturing environment that challenges students to fulfill their academic potential with THE approach that learning is fun and every student is unique. While at the University of San Diego, she received her Bachelor of Arts and taught for the San Diego Unified School district. When she is not at Sylvan, you will find her spending quality time with her family or pursuing her other passions in fitness and art.

    Betsy Rosebrugh

    Senior Director of Education

    Betsy brings to Sylvan Learning Center over 30 years of experience working with children and families in an educational setting. She graduated from Duke University with a BA in Psychology and went on to earn a Masters degree in Education with a focus on Reading from Loyola College. Early literacy is her area of expertise, and her teaching has been focused on early elementary grades. After teaching in a variety of public and private schools New York, Maryland, and Arizona, she moved out of the classroom to lead the School and Child Life programs at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Outside of work, she enjoys being outside to hike the surrounding mountains, golfing and exploring the beaches with her husband.

    Education/Operations Coordinator

    After receiving her degree from Wayne State University in Michigan, Cat moved to Los Angeles and spent several years teaching Shakespeare in the Beyond Borders: Arts and Language for Youth program. She has worked for the Sylvan Learning Center for over 16 years in many different roles. In her free time, Catherine enjoys baking, doing anything crafty, and spending time with her husband and two children.
  • Sharie Palatt, Tutor

    Sharie Palatt

    Sharie is thrilled to be a Sylvan teacher! Possessing a California State multiple subject credential has allowed her to develop an extensive teaching background. She has had experience teaching in self-contained classrooms, in addition to one-on-one and small group tutoring. Sharie earned her Master’s Degree in Creative Writing in June 2012 from Antioch University in Los Angeles. Her employment in a variety of elementary schools and two design colleges has enabled her to carry out her passion for working with learners of all ages. When she is not teaching, Sharie enjoys reading, watching baseball (she is an avid Dodgers fan!), and spending time with her husband and two adult children.

    Gail feels fortunate to have found her true calling, “teaching”. She is proud to be working at Sylvan with other dedicated teachers and staff. As an experienced educator in both general and special education, Gail brings her expertise to her students of all ages. She has a passion for education and truly enjoys helping her students feel good about themselves and see their own progress. When she is not teaching Gail enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter, her friends and trying new things (currently she is taking a ceramics class).

    STEM Tutor

    Shae was introduced to engineering in high school while competing on the robotics team. He was lucky to be a part of an amazing team in 2014 that won the Vex Robotics World Championship. Since that time, he has loved both studying and teaching STEM all around the greater LA area.

    Elizabeth Williams

    Tutor

    Elizabeth is passionate about teaching and helping children of all ages be life-long learners. She has been teaching for over twenty years in various capacities as a lecturer, classroom teacher and one-on-one tutor. Elizabeth teaches Math and English, and when she is not teaching, she works as a screenwriter. She also enjoys painting, reading and the rain.

    Christina is passionate about using the Socratic principles and positive psychology to help students conquer their schoolwork and “hit the ground” running to a bright future. She is enthusiastic to energize the “future doctors and scientists of LA” to be well-rounded, creative thinkers, who are well equipped with the fundamentals. Christina is a former Dornsife-Tyler PHD Environmental fellow at USC and has lived in Hawaii studying climate change and marine microbiology. She has been tutoring in chemistry, biology, environmental science, K-10 math skills, SAT, ACT, ISEE, and HSPT prep for over 5 years.

    Leah is the one person who is always the first to get up to dance at a party and actually thinks writing essays can be fun! Born and raised in Louisville Kentucky, she has lived in LA for almost 9 years. Pursuing a career in entertainment, she is equally passionate about education and encouraging students to be fearless thinkers. She enjoys her time teaching at Sylvan and is looking forward to watching her students grow.

    Roxana loves to learn new things! She keeps going back to school to learn new and different skills. As a writer, she has several published pieces. She loves kids and is a strong addition to the administrative team. 
  • Rachel Cohen, Administrator

    Rachel Cohen

    Administrator

    Rachel was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. Her number one love is working with children, and encouraging them to believe in themselves. She graduated from USC, receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences with a focus on Early Childhood Education. She was also a member of the USC Repertory Dance Company. She currently teaches different styles of dance to children of all ages, predominantly Classical Ballet, choreographing numerous stage performances throughout California. Rachel is one of the word’s largest Harry Potter fans, loves to travel, meet new people, and spend time with family. 
  • Jeff Kaplan, Tutor

    Jeff Kaplan

    Tutor

    Jeff has always loved learning and school. His earliest memory is helping his 2nd grade teacher set up her room before school started in September. After spending many years as a fund raiser for various non profits Jeff got his teaching credential in Social Science and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction. During the day, Jeff is a substitute teacher for LAUSD. He likes spinach, broccoli, avocado, writing, reading, running and the movies. 
  • Derek Ranney, Tutor

    Derek Ranney

    Tutor

    Derek is a Hazardous Substance Engineer for the state of California and recently moved to LA from Seattle. He has a degree in Chemical Engineering from Washington State University, and a Master's in Actuarial Science from Heriot Watt University. When Derek isn't tutoring at the Sylvan center, he enjoys reading, working out, or going on adventures with his friends.
