Our tutors and staff in Sherman Oaks & Studio City consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed.     Center Director

    Marilyn Del Rio has been with the Sylvan team for 7 years supporting centers in Downey, Long Beach, and Culver City in various roles and found her passion in marketing as she developed relationships with partner schools and businesses. Her favorite part of working with Sylvan though has been helping families find solutions for their child(ren) and seeing the confidence grow with their skills. Marilyn is excited to work with your child(ren) as the Center Director of Sylvan Learning of Sherman Oaks. When she's not in the center, you'll find her at the nearest dog park with her fur-baby, Gigi, or enjoying music at a local concert.

    Program Manager

    Nancy has a gift for working with kids. While she has many tutoring talents, Nancy finds the greatest joy in teaching elementary reading and math. She has been a tutor and program manager for the Northridge center for 2 years, and earned her Elementary credential from CSUN. Nancy has also worked as a teacher's assistant at Garden Grove Elementary. When Nancy isn't at Sylvan, you'll find her playing and singing songs to her new baby boy!

    Education/Operations Coordinator

    After receiving her degree from Wayne State University in Michigan, Cat moved to Los Angeles and spent several years teaching Shakespeare in the Beyond Borders: Arts and Language for Youth program. She has worked for the Sylvan Learning Center for over 17 years in many different roles. In her free time, Catherine enjoys baking, doing anything crafty, and spending time with her husband and two children.

    Kyle A.


    Kyle grew up in Ann Arbor, MI, a mid-sized university town, that provided a wonderful public education, as well as the chance to develop a love for the arts, athletics, and amiable arguments. After receiving a B.A. in Film from Kenyon College in Gambier, OH, Kyle moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the film industry. In 2017, he returned to school, and became a fellow at the American Film Institute Conservatory, where he received an M.F.A. in Screenwriting. In Kyle’s spare time, he continues to pursue his dream of writing for the movies. He is also a marathon runner, an avid reader, and a sucker for hiking in National Parks. Kyle has always had a passion for education and hopes his love of learning inspires today’s students to feel the same way about the power of infinite self-growth.

    Felice A.


    Felice is an elementary school teacher who really enjoys teaching English. She loves helping a student who dislikes reading finally connect to a piece of literature, and looks forward to the discussions that follow, book after book. Felice is originally from Los Angeles and holds an Elementary Education Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Mount St. Mary's College. In her free time she enjoys traveling, spending time with friends and family and finding new places to eat.

    Alexandra grew up in Boston, MA, where her parents encouraged her inquisitive nature and love of reading and solving real-life math problems. She then earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Skidmore College. Alexandra has a passion for teaching math and English and helping students find those “aha!” moments of understanding when learning something new. In her free time, you can find her cuddling her puppy Charlie, cooking, and curling up to read a book.

    Gay is an experienced teacher who especially loves teaching reading to early elementary school aged students. She loves that reading opens a world of imagination for students. Gay is from Los Angeles, and holds an Early Childhood Education Credential from Cal State Northridge. When she's not at Sylvan, Gay enjoys taking photos of nature.

    Roxana loves to learn new things! She keeps going back to school to learn new and different skills. As a writer, she has several published pieces. She loves kids and is a strong addition to the administrative team.

    Sharie P.


    Sharie is thrilled to be a Sylvan teacher! Possessing a California State multiple subject credential has allowed her to develop an extensive teaching background. She has had experience teaching in self-contained classrooms, in addition to one-on-one and small group tutoring. Sharie earned her Master’s Degree in Creative Writing in June 2012 from Antioch University in Los Angeles. Her employment in a variety of elementary schools and two design colleges has enabled her to carry out her passion for working with learners of all ages. When she is not teaching, Sharie enjoys reading, watching baseball (she is an avid Dodgers fan!), and spending time with her husband and two adult children.

    Shahnaz P.


    Shahnaz is a gifted math teacher who has a passion for the topic. She finds great joy in helping students who are struggling with a concept overcome their challenges and learn the material. Shahnaz is originally from Tehran, and holds BS degrees in physics and accounting. Her hobbies include playing chess, backgammon, rock climbing, yoga, running and ping-pong.
  • Jeff Kaplan, Tutor

    Jeff Kaplan


    Jeff has always loved learning and school. His earliest memory is helping his 2nd grade teacher set up her room before school started in September. After spending many years as a fund raiser for various non profits Jeff got his teaching credential in Social Science and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction. During the day, Jeff is a substitute teacher for LAUSD. He likes spinach, broccoli, avocado, writing, reading, running and the movies.
