New Sylvan Learning Center opens in Stafford, more planned for region

Local Sylvan franchise owner and Fredericksburg resident Scott Lindsey opened a location in Stafford County last week and has plans for two more satellite offices in the region.

The North Stafford office at 25 Clement Drive, Suite 115, adjacent to Stafford Marketplace, is a full-service brick-and-mortar branch with 15 employees.

Lindsey is also working on opening branches in Woodbridge and Alexandria before summer, in addition to his first location in Falls Church.

Once those locations are completed, satellite training facilities in Fredericksburg, King George County and Arlington are slated to open by the beginning of the school year this fall.

Lindsey said he is still in the process of finding locations for those offices.

The satellite locations will have six staff members each.

At these new regional Sylvan Learning Centers, Lindsey is offering a new curriculum in coding, robotics and mathematics enrichment.

The coding section of the curriculum has four courses. In each, students develop a video game that can be taken home to play.

The robotics courses have similar practical applications, with students building robots that can be taken home.

He rolled out the robotics courses—which are in partnership with Lego—at the Fredericksburg Kids Expo last weekend. Sylvan employees and children attending the two-day event built more than 160 robots.

The “Math Edge” enrichment courses are also new to the curriculum. Rather than filling in gaps in education, the course seeks to enrich math instruction.
