    Center Director

    Ken brings a passion for education to his role of Center Director, along with a heartfelt commitment to customer service. Ken started at Sylvan as our Instructional Manager and was subsequently promoted to Associate Director of Education and now Center Director. Ken manages our complex schedule, ensuring the best possible student-tutor matches, and oversees Center operations with a sharp focus on quality improvement. Ken has a BA in Philosophy and Religion from SFSU. When not at Sylvan, Ken enjoys reading, meditating, drinking tea, and playing with his cat. He also enjoys discussing the qualities of fine chocolate. Ken is fluent in both Cantonese and Mandarin.

    Kelly Page

    Director of Education

    Kelly's career in education spans more than 25 years of working with pre-K through 12th grade students. She attended University of Illinois at Chicago, where she received her B.A. in Elementary Education with a minor in Psychology and her teaching credential. Kelly taught 5th grade in Chicago for several years before moving home to California, where she joined Sylvan Learning in the mid-90's. Kelly absolutely loves working with students and their families. She is passionate about education and helping students shine and succeed academically. When not at work, Kelly's top three pastimes include reading (and finding out what others are reading), roller skating and hula hooping.
  • Lori Livingston, Executive Director

    Lori Livingston

    Executive Director

    Lori brings a passion for education and a background in executive management to Sylvan Learning of SF.  She has held management positions at Apple Computer and Fidelity Investments, and has served two terms on her local public school board. Lori has raised four sons, each one benefiting from the individualized support they received to reach their academic potential. She loves helping Sylvan students reach their own academic goals. Lori is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University and a Harvard Business School alumna. She is an avid skier, golfer, hiker, biker and reader.
  • Donald Livingston , Director/Business Manager

    Donald Livingston

    Director/Business Manager

    Donald manages Center business functions and gets to know Sylvan students by conducting many of our assessments.  After graduating from Stanford with a degree in Communication, Donald worked in public relations and marketing. He enjoys using his marketing skills and service orientation to contribute to the successful operations of Sylvan Learning of SF. Donald is an avid SF Bay Area sports fan, an expert chess player and an identical twin. A Bay Area native, Donald resides in San Francisco.

    Lance Santelices

    Office Manager

    Lance oversees communications with families and keeps Center operations running smoothly. He grew up in LA and came to SF to complete his undergraduate studies in Communication and Marketing at SFSU. Before joining our team, Lance was a valued employee of AMC Theatres, where he developed a reputation for being a skilled team leader and creative problem solver. Lance takes pride in providing a very high level of customer service to Sylvan families. In his spare time, you can find Lance checking out new food spots, taking photographs, skating, or sneaker collecting.

    Dana Sargenti

    Lead Tutor and Instructional Manager

    Dana comes to us as a teacher with the Bay Area Archdiocese Elementary Schools.  She graduated with a Physical Education Degree and completed credential coursework at SFSU.  She has also done everything from serving on Executive Boards for the Archdiocese to teaching gymnastics! Dana is a reading, writing, math and HSPT/SSAT tutor at Sylvan and also supports the team as Instructional Manager.  When not teaching at Sylvan or in her classroom, you may find her reading, playing tennis, or doing yoga.
  • Gwen Mohler , Tutor

    Gwen Mohler


    Gwen is a SF Bay Area native and alumna of St. Ignatius College Preparatory. She studied Business at University of Dallas, where she received a Dean’s Scholarship and served as Senior Captain for the Women’s Lacrosse team. Gwen is a skilled reading and writing tutor, having been an English Language instructor in Spain before joining Sylvan. She is also an adept math tutor, having thrived in a rigorous business curriculum in college. Gwen’s favorite saying is, “You’re never fully dressed without a smile.”

    Julie Wells


    Julie has been a valued tutor at Sylvan of San Francisco for over 10 years!  With her bachelors in French, a minor in ESL and her teaching credential from San Jose State, Julie is a skilled tutor in reading, elementary math, writing and study skills.  Our students and team love her!  She works with special needs students at a high school in San Francisco and has experience teaching languages at schools in Brentwood and San Jose as well. When Julie is not teaching, you'll find her reading or listening to classic rock.
  • Warner Henson II, Tutor

    Warner Henson II


    Warner is one of our most versatile tutors with expertise in math, writing, and college test prep.   Warner is a professional teacher, a published academic writer and a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology at Stanford. He holds a B.S. in Sociology from Texas A & M. He has worked as a Teaching Assistant at both Stanford University and Texas A & M. Our students love him!
  • Safia Msami, Tutor

    Safia Msami


    Safia is a warm and friendly tutor with a particular passion for reading and writing. She has a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies from the English Department at SFSU and a Masters in Global Studies from UC Berkeley.  She comes to us highly recommended by the SFSU Campus Academic Resource Program where she was a sought-after English Tutor. In addition to tutoring at Sylvan, Safia works as a copy editor. Safia grew up in Tanzania. 
  • Peggy Tran , Tutor

    Peggy Tran


    Peggy is a new arrival to the Bay Area and we are delighted to have her! She comes to us from Huntington Learning Center in Alabama, where she was Head Instructor and Hiring Manager for over six years. Peggy’s specialty is college test prep tutoring. She is also an experienced writing and ESL teacher, having been a Literature, Composition and ESL Instructor at the University of South Alabama. Peggy holds an MA in English from the University of South Alabama and a BA in English from Florida State University, both with concentrations in Creative Writing. 
  • Edward Huie, Tutor

    Edward Huie


    Edward is a former IT professional who is now enjoying a second career as an educator. He holds a MA in Mathematics from UCLA and a BA in Mathematics from UC Berkeley. He is currently enrolled in the Master of Arts in Teaching program at University of San Francisco. Edward has experience tutoring mathematics from elementary level math through Calculus. He is also trained as a SAT/ACT test prep tutor and is skilled at working with students on their reading skills as well. In addition to tutoring math and reading, Edward can also teach tennis! 
  • Sean Ogami, Instructor

    Sean Ogami


    Sean is an SF native and Lick Wilmerding High School alumna. He graduated from Pitzer College with a major in Organismal Biology and minor in Media Studies. One of our more versatile tutors, Sean is strong in science, math, writing and test prep. He brings several years of experience as a writing tutor for Pitzer students, and was the Staff Editor for the student life newspaper. In his free time, Sean enjoys cooking, drawing and hiking.

    Ben Baron


    Ben is one of our versatile tutors with skills in math, science, and language arts. He attended Urban School in SF and went on to graduate from Connecticut College with a double major in Molecular Biology and American Studies. Ben has volunteered as a mentor at the Jewish Family and Children Services and tutored reading, writing, and math at 826 Valencia. Ben comes to us most recently from the UCSF Department of Neurology where he was a research specialist. He is currently teaching at Marin Horizon as well as tutoring here at Sylvan. 
  • Jonathan Wei , Tutor

    Jonathan Wei


    Jonathan is a versatile math and language arts tutor who really enjoys getting to know his students. He has a B.S. in Psychology from UCSD and is an alumnus of Galileo High School in SF.  He has over 10 years of experience working in public and private school classrooms. In addition to teaching at Sylvan, Jonathan currently works as a technology instructor at St. Brendan school and provides classroom and administrative support at Cathedral School for Boys. He is an avid wrestler, loves anime and is a San Francisco native! 
  • Theodore “Teddy” Vollman , Tutor

    Theodore “Teddy” Vollman


    Teddy earned his BA in Physics from The University of Chicago. He is one of our versatile tutors who can tutor any level of math or physics. He also helps our students prepare for their SAT, ACT, SSAT and HSPT tests. Teddy has worked as a camp counselor for both the Lincoln Park Zoo and the SF Zoo and was an education intern at Yerkes Observatory. He brings to his work with our students a passion for making difficult concepts understandable.
  • Jacob Rubinstein, Tutor

    Jacob Rubinstein


    Jacob tutors math for students of all ages and ability levels, successfully making math concepts from fractions to calculus understandable for Sylvan students. He is also a talented SAT, ACT and HSPT prep tutor. Jacob discovered his love of math while an undergraduate student at Roosevelt University, where he completed a BS in Mathematics with Honors. While at Roosevelt, Jacob tutored mathematics to college students ranging from pre-college algebra to calculus 3 and linear algebra. Our students are so lucky that Jacob decided to return home to California to pursue his dream of becoming a high school math teacher!
  • Michael Dao, Tutor

    Michael Dao


    Michael is one of our skilled language arts tutors with experience working with K-12 students of all ages. Prior to joining Sylvan, he worked as a middle school English teacher for Aim High and as an elementary teacher for Edventure More. Michael earned his BA in English Literature from SFSU and is currently working on his teaching certifications. In additional to having excellent English language skills, Michael speaks fluent Chinese. 
  • Torie Palmer, Tutor

    Torie Palmer


    Torie is a skilled reading and writing tutor who loves making the writing process approachable for Sylvan students. She comes to Sylvan after finishing up her day teaching middle school language arts right up the street at St. Brendan Parish School. Torie has extensive experience working with youth, having supervised a team of camp counselors for the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco Summer Camp. Torie earned her B.A. in Journalism from the University of Nevada, Reno and is an alumna of Sacred Heart Cathedral in SF. Torie loves teaching and is working toward her Multiple Subject Teaching Credential.
  • Helen Fahnestock , Tutor

    Helen Fahnestock


    Helen’s specialty is writing: She is passionate about literature, storytelling and writing in all genres. Helen earned a B.A. in English from St. Mary’s College and is currently working towards her M.F.A. in creative writing at USF. She has written and edited her own novel, publishing chapters online where her writing has a found a large following. She was previously a volunteer Editor for Saint Mary's College Literary Magazine. Helen loves sharing her love of reading and writing with students of all ages. 
  • Izabella “Izzy” Santana , Tutor

    Izabella “Izzy” Santana


    Izzy is one of our expert reading and writing tutors who loves working with students of all ages. She earned her BA in English and an MFA in English-Creative Writing from SFSU. Izzy has previously worked as an AVID tutor at SFUSD and a volunteer tutor at the Boys and Girls Club. She was a graduate teaching assistant in the English department while at SFSU. When she’s not at Sylvan, you might find Izzy exploring new bookstores or working on a new novel! 
  • Scarlet Passer, Tutor

    Scarlet Passer


    Scarlet is one of our versatile tutors who loves reading as much as she loves math! Scarlet is a Lowell High School alum, where her love of math was ignited. She went on to UC Santa Cruz, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Physics and a minor in Earth Sciences. Scarlet loves coaching and mentoring young people and has worked as both a dance instructor and backpacking guide. She plans to continue her education by pursuing graduate studies in Geophysics or Astrophysics. Scarlet has a second degree black belt in Goju-Ryu karate, a Hang-2 ranking in hang gliding, and is an avid dancer, too!

    Nikki Phillips


    Nikki is passionate about education and ignites a love of learning in all of her Sylvan students. She has an AA in Anthropology and an AA in Psychology from City College and is earning a BA in Anthropology and a BS in Statistics from SFSU. Nikki works as a mentor for incoming SFSU students, helping them to successfully transfer and achieve their best in their classes. Prior to joining Sylvan, Nikki served as a peer tutor in anthropology, psychology and statistics at City College. 
  • Henry Hope Csikszentmihalyi, Tutor

    Henry Hope Csikszentmihalyi


    Henry is one of our versatile math and science tutors who is also strong in language arts and test prep. Henry attended the Bay School in SF and went on to earn a B.S. in Biology at Oberlin College. While at Oberlin, Henry was a Teaching Assistant in General Chemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, helping undergraduates learn quantitative and reasoning skills. Henry was also an Oberlin residential advisor, facilitating community building for first year students.

    Rachelle Lamb

    Teaching Assistant

    As teaching assistant, Rachelle welcomes all Sylvan of SF students to our instructional floor. She provides extra instructional support and ensures that tutors and students have everything they need to have positive and productive sessions. She also runs our fun and educational “transition time” activities. Rachelle received her BA in Psychology from the UC Santa Cruz, completing the rigorous Intensive Program. At UCSC, Rachelle worked as a peer advisor, facilitating students' critical thinking as they planned out steps to meet their academic goals. She has been an active participant in Girl Scouts since 2002, serving today as an adult volunteer.
