Our tutors and staff in Westlake consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Westlake know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores.     Beth Smith has always loved working with children. She can personally relate to children who sometimes find traditional classroom teaching challenging. Her favorite thing about teaching is seeing the growth of students as they learn. She says it feels good to know she helped them “get it.” Beth has a BS in Elementary Education from Ashland University. She has taught at the elementary school level for over 8 years and she has worked with Sylvan for over 15 years. Beth tutors in reading, writing, math, homework support, and ACT/SAT prep. Beth enjoys crafting, scrapbooking, reading mysteries, and spending time with her niece and nephew.

    Trenton has enjoyed a life-long love of learning. The son, grandson and great-grandson of teachers, he has been tutoring math, reading, and writing all of his life. As a former trustee and board president of Ruffing Montessori in Cleveland Heights – from which his son graduated - he has come to learn the nuts and bolts of education. But his favorite aspect of education is the privilege of witnessing those moments when new learning emerges. Trenton graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS in Finance from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He tutors in reading, writing, math, and homework support.

    What Richard enjoys most is bringing students to understanding how they will use math in the real world. He loves math, but more importantly he loves being there for the students who hated math or never understood it, but needed it to move forward. Richard Corr has a BS in Mathematics from Baldwin-Wallace College and a Master of Arts in Mathematics from Cleveland State University. He has a teaching license for secondary math. Richard taught high-school math for 15 years at Beaumont school, and has tutored countless students in math, from basic math through AP Calculus. He co-authored the high school math curriculum for the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, and wrote and implemented curriculum using project based activities and modern “agile” methodologies to teach STEM principles for a hands-on learning center.

    Susan Swenfurth truly enjoys the connections she builds with her students. Susan received her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Dayton. She began working as an elementary school teacher right after college. She teaches at the pre-school and elementary school levels. Susan has worked with Sylvan for over 9 years. At Sylvan of Westlake she tutors Reading and Math. In her spare time she enjoys tennis and cooking.

    Murray McKinsey enjoys helping students acquire insight into their work. He has been a tutor at Sylvan for 5 years. A life-long learner, Murray earned his Bachelors Degree from University of Missouri, and his Masters Degree from Western Michigan University. At Sylvan, Murray teaches math, ACT/SAT prep, STEM classes, homework support, and Math Edge. Murray especially appreciates it when students, who were struggling, gain mastery and confidence.. Murray has lived in Lakewood for 17 years with his wife and 5 children.

    Rachael Rosh loves seeing the “light bulb” moment in students. She enjoys helping students see what they know while working with them to fill the gaps. Rachael earned her BS in Middle Childhood Education from Heidelberg University. At Sylvan, Rachael tutors in math and reading.

    Victoria loves working and spending time with children. She received her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from the University of Toledo in Early Childhood Education and has advanced training in Trauma Informed Care. Victoria has been teaching elementary school in recent  years and is excited to work at Sylvan! She will be tutoring reading and math. When she is not teaching, Victoria enjoys playing tennis, hiking, biking and being outside as much as possible!

    Jessica enjoys fostering positive relationships with students and empowering them to achieve their goals. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Middle Childhood Education from Baldwin Wallace University and a graduate certificate in School Leadership for Social-Emotional Learning and Character Development from Saint Elizabeth University. Jessica has taught science and language arts at the elementary and middle school levels, and she is excited to bring her experience to Sylvan! In her spare time, Jessica enjoys watching Cleveland sports and dancing.

    Kelly Massa

    Teacher

    Kelly loves to challenge students to reach their full potential and develop a passion for learning. She grew up in Westlake and graduated from Bowling Green State University with a BS in Adolescent/Young Adult Integrated Language Arts. Kelly has been teaching high school for eight years. In her spare time, she enjoys boating, listening to music, and traveling.
